Ray Abeyta. "At first glance, many of Abeyta's works appear to be Spanish colonial paintings dating from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. However, the artist incorporates present-day imagery with Spanish colonial and indigenous elements." A short bio and history here. Here's one of my favorites.

Killer mutant staph infection on the

04/12/2004 12:43 PM
Scary Business Week article about an anti-biotic resistant strain of staph.
For the past 30 years, hospitals have been battling a mutant form called methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) that is resistant to penicillin-related antibiotics and is especially lethal. Now this drug-defying strain is showing up in the general population. It can be deadly if it enters the blood stream, heart, or lungs, killing anywhere from 25% to 43% of its victims. For years, the best treatment for MRSA was the powerful antibiotic vancomycin. But even this weapon has failed against new strains of staph that have emerged. Some infectious-disease experts predict that by 2010, 40% of staph infections will be vancomycin-resistant.

The Nature of Normal Human Variety A talk with Dr. Armand Leroi (his website). "Almost uniquely among modern scientific problems [the problem of normal human variety] is a problem that we can apprehend as we walk down the street. We live in an age now where the deepest scientific problems are buried away from our immediate perception. They concern the origin of the universe. They concern the relationships of subatomic particles. They concern the nature and structure of the human genome. Nobody can see these things without large bits of expensive equipment. But when I consider the problem of human variety I feel as Aristotle must have felt when he first walked down to the shore at Lesvos for the first time. The world is new again." Slate on variety meats

Slate on variety meats 04/23/2004 01:46 PM

Interesting article over at Slate about all the gross things you usually only eat disguised as hot dogs, Offal Good - Why upscale chefs are serving euphemistically named "variety meats." Apparently British chef Fergus Henderson has a new book out entitled The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating that has recipes for all the parts that Americans tend to throw away.

The publication of Henderson's book heralds a new fashion in food, already discernable in various hot restaurants in New York: offal, the organs and extremities (nose, cheeks, tail, feet) of butchered animals, has become chic.

Foie gras, truffles, and other traditional staples of gastronomic excess now find themselves cheek by jowl on upscale menus with, well, cheeks and jowls.

I haven't noticed this trend yet, but maybe I'm not eating at the "right" spots. I certainly don't think I'll rush out and buy the book any time soon. While I'm in favor of using the whole of the animal or plant -- and don't like waste one bit -- I have a hard time trimming the tips off a chicken's wings before I put it in to roast. As a failed vegetarian, I now enjoy meat occasionally when I'm out, but it's pretty much impossible for me to do any kind of chopping, hacking, or anything else with animal parts in my own kitchen. I don't expect to be boiling a pig's head any time soon, even if I had a pot it would fit in.

Also, who's the editor at Slate that allowed such horrible pun for the title?

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries 09/15/2004 01:39 PM
Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights, it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying to solve that problem by creating a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but the weaker batteries won't last as long.

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
I've complained in the past about the annoyanc e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo, the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco over at CBS Marketwatch has noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is collecting public information. However, if the info was given to an individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.
