traveling

traveling 12/30/2003 01:14 AM

I'll be leaving in a few hours... so the last couple of days have been a mix of work and preparation.

The worst part is choosing which books to take. If it was up to me, I would just take them all. Sure, I'll read maybe one or two, but which two? Arrrgh!

ebooks are ok, but I still want books. Paper. Hardcovers. Not even fancy e-ink systems would do. But, for a trip, if I could just dump all my meatspace library into a single e-volume and take that, it would be great. Every book should come built-in with a digital version. So how about it? One of those 2.5 inch CDs behind every book's cover? Now that's multimedia that I'd buy.

That aside, I've got a good assortment of videos and music on the notebook, so I won't have to fear lame in-flight movies either.

More tomorrow, after the timezone change (transatlantic trips going west never fail to leave me a bit frazzled--on second though, going East as well :)).

Traveling with intrigue

Traveling with intrigue 01/04/2004 03:32 PM
Weird experiences galore: sitting today on an underground carriage (Piccadilly line, if you must know), watching three ladies. Obviously a family, since they all looked alike, but what really captivated me were their completely bland faces and vacant eyes that stared at the opposite wall somewhere around my chest level. The only way I could tell they were alive were the small twitches of their jaws, as they chewed on bubblegum in unison, with the centre lady - well, a girl really - doing a pop every 8 chews or so. It was fascinating. Just like in Stomp.

My eerie feeling of displacement to another plane was suddenly doubled, as a dwarf walked in and started to play a very bad rendering of "Lambada" on a bloody accordion. The dwarf did upon closer examination turn out to be a 12-year old child, but for a moment I thought I had woken up in a David Lynch movie.

Anyway, home sweet home and all that. I'm back in Helsinki. Whee. I'm so happy I don't have to work tomorrow.

A Traveling Story

A Traveling Story 01/06/2005 12:01 PM

I just got back to Washington after a long trip over the holidays back home to Wisconsin. I wanted to pass along a quick story from my trip.

While waiting for my flight out of Seattle, I ran into a staff photographer from the Chicago Tribune. He does photos for the hardcopy paper only, not the online version. He was in Seattle for a story they were running on Boeing. I asked him what he used for a camera, certain it was a 35mm but was shocked to hear they converted a few years ago to Digital. But then the real surprise came, they use a Nikon D1H, an old 3 megapixel SLR Digital. I asked why only a 3 megapixel camera and he told me that it was all they needed for news print quality. This year they are converting to a D2X which is a 12 megapixel camera, but they are in no rush. He travels with a Mac iBook and uploads the photos via FTP to the Trib's server every evening.

Just goes to show you that the megapixel aspect of a digital camera is not as important as some companies tend to make you believe.

SMC Offers Multifunction Traveling
Gateway
08/03/2004 01:04 PM
SMC has thrown the kitchen sink into its traveler's access point, a street price $99 device that has the full complement of Wi-Fi options: The AirPort Express ($129) from Apple may be cute and small, but the SMC has four modes versus AirPort Express's 2 1/2. Express can act as a client (for streaming music and USB only), a WDS relay or remote (to Apple or compatible gateways only), or a standalone 802.11g/WPA gateway. I count Apple's client mode as 1/2 since it can't handle traffic over its Ethernet port as a bridge in that mode, apparently. The SMC--trippingly off the tongue call it EZ Connect™ g 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit (SMCWTK-G)--can act as an access point, an Ethernet bridge (so full MAC masquerading onto any network), Ethernet bridge, repeater, and point-to-point or point-to-multipoint bridge. (Those last two are similar WDS modes, so I won't count them separately.) SMC doesn't mention weight or the size of the power cord. The Express has an integral power plug, but you can get an extension cord as part of an audio/power kit for $39. The SMC unit can draw power over USB, too. [link via Tom's Networking]...

I think Orlowski is too quick to scorn in this piece.  He seems to think it's easy to adjust for the sort of people who vote in an online poll 8,700 times.  The comments regarding source IP address reveal a degree of naivety, though.  For starters, users behind corporate firewalls will normally share outbound IP addresses based on proxy servers.  Users of the largest at-home dialup services such as AOL and Earthlink will typically be routed through such caching proxies as well.  It's common for hundreds of AOL users to share a common outbound IP address, and also common for users to alternate between IP addresses on sequential requests to the same web site, because corporate and ISP proxies are often arranged in "farms" which round-robin or otherwise distribute connections.  In other words, two back-to-back requests from the same address do not necessarily come from the same machine, and two back-to-back requests from the same machine do not necessarily come from the same source IP address.  I'm not saying that it's impossible to eliminate poll-stuffers, but the techniques Orlowski mentions are useless.  There are very few on-line polls that I would trust enough to become indignant upon discovery of fraud, and I seriously doubt that the 8,700 fakes discovered by Frist's office are close to being a complete count of the questionable and fraudulent votes in that particular poll.

~

This latest piece in The People's Daily is impressive.  Normally their "propaganda" pieces can be classified into two categories: the pieces written by party members and then translated to English, and the pieces written by Western socialist intellectuals which bear little resemblance to a communist party pronouncement but are nevertheless run for their perceived persuasive value with Western audiences.  This latest piece is remarkable, though, because it is rather readable in Western terms (almost like an Atlantic Monthly or Economist article), but is clearly following the rigid presentation and argument style of a normal Chinese communist party proclamation.  The Western intellectual style of argument uses lots of facts and a sort of academic appeal that wants to seem very reasonable and objective while overwhelming the reader with erudition.  The Chinese communist persuasion style, on the other hand, is to appeal to concrete and fundamental doctrinal observations.  Thus we are informed that the American history has been a progression of "four expansions" dominated by different motives (and with capitalism disguised as spiritualism being the common thread).  All of this is presented matter-of-fact, like a critique presented by a German philosopher.  It's also erudite and articulate enough that I could almost believe it to be written by someone from UC Berkeley.  Only almost, though, because the intellectual embellishments seemed to be there only as supportive (rather than an end in themselves) and the undercurrents of half-masked anti-establishment snipes were missing.

And the last two sentences of the article seem like a poorly-veiled threat:  "... the United States should not choose a road by which to establish global order or an American empire through unilateralism-based military actions. Only when the United States refrains from taking the road of pursuing global empire, can it avoid terrorists' bombs or other forms of attacks befalling on its own territory."  In other words, as soon as America agrees to share her global dominance with one or two other well-qualified nations (like China), the attacks will cease.  Not that I disagree, but I am surprised to see it put so bluntly in an official communication like this.

One of the sad, geeky things I do for fun is to follow my referrer log, i.e. checking out the sites that people come to this weblog from. Sometimes, your site gets listed in the oddest of places, and with luck, you may find other interesting links from those sites. You can think of it as some sort of a website Friendster: different web sites get listed together if they have something in common. Though often, the common factor tends to be something you don't expect.

For example, I saw a bunch of people coming to Things You Can Do With Your Laundry But Probably Should Not from an Italian dis cussion board, which in turn leads me to... Happy Tree Friends, a wacky and violent cartoon with episodes that last only a couple of minutes. You know, the kinda stuff that would be perfect to forward to your friends if your mobile phone could play them.

I can't stop marveling the amount of talent and creativity that people keep pouring onto the Internet.

The UStec systems effectively establish a wired infrastructure throughout your house for sharing media and phone connections and include a UStec router along with commercial grade wiring and wallplates. While pricing isn't available, it's painfully obvious that you must purchase the UStec tecCenter through a certified dealer—the system is designed with the intent of being built into new homes rather than existing ones anyway, so this may not be a bad thing altogether.

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed

Fossil Wrist PDA (Finally) Reviewed 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

wristpda.jpg imageFor those of you who don't mind adorning your wrist with what appears to be a small, metal-framed end table comes the Wrist PDA from Fossil. Possibly the first wrist watch to come with a stylus, (albeit one that looks like the nail file from a mini-Leatherman) Fossil has jam-packed every ounce of PalmOS goodness they could into a little square. As a bonus, they've graciously packed it in an adorable orange tin which you can later use to store your Tinker Toys or fingers collection. FossilWristPDA.com has a surprisingly balanced review/getting started guide that gets only a little bit smarmy (and we'll cut them some slack, since they've obviously been anxiously sitting on that domain for a while). It seems that writing on the watch has a bit of a learning curve, but using most third party software works well and allows you to pack quite a bit of functionality onto your wrist. It's only taken like 3 years to get here.
