In the trial version, gamers can choose between four nations: the Persians from the expansion pack, and three others from the original game. Players will be able to play through the tutorial and then get a taste of the Alexander the Great campaign, one of four historical campaigns in the retail version. Gamers will also be able to try their hand on the battlefield on one of three different random map types. This stand-alone trial version does not require gamers to own the original retail version of Rise of Nations.

Destineer subsidiary MacSoft late on Tuesday posted an update to its Mac conversion of the popular first-person shooter arena game Unreal Tournament 2004. The new patch, v3323, brings the Mac version back to parity with its PC counterpart, which was updated only the day before. The update provides changes to the Onslaught game mode, and makes various changes to the game's core engine, general gameplay issues and networking. The update can be applied to any retail version of Unreal Tournament 2004; an updated demo version is coming.

Destineer subsidiary MacSoft on Thursday announced that its Mac conversion of Railroad Tycoon 3 for Mac OS X will be released on September 13, 2004. The company has not previously noted plans to publish this port, so news that Railroad Tycoon 3 will be released for the Mac so soon may surprise many Mac gamers. Also included with the software is the Coast to Coast Expansion Pack, an add-on that was available separately for PC gamers.

Mac gamers who were put off by the difference between the PC and Mac release dates of Unreal Tournament 2003 should be happy with the production schedule for this version, according to Epic's Mark Rein. "We've been working on the Mac version of Unreal Tournament 2004 right alongside the Windows version. Mac users should get a nice surprise when the official ship dates are announced."

Destineer subsidiary MacSoft on Wednesday announced the long-awaited releases of Shadows of Underentide and Hordes of the Underdark, two expansion packs for the role playing game Neverwinter Nights. Neverwinter Nights was released for the Mac in July 2003. It's been no secret to avid Neverwinter Nights players that the expansion packs released for the Windows version of the game also work on the Mac, but some players have longed for a Mac-specific installer.

Destineer Studios subsidiary MacSoft on Wednesday released an update to Unreal Tournament 2003, their popular first-person shooter. The patch -- version 2225.1, according to its read me file -- adds a variety of enhancements, including performance improvements. Ryan Gordon, the game's Mac developer, claims that performance improvements of 25 percent or more compared to the retail version are typical, thanks to optimizations, lots of new Altivec (or Velocity Engine) code, and a completely rewritten sound subsystem. Single CPU systems get the most improvement out of this version, according to the developer notes.

The Mac demo has been released on the same day as its PC counterpart, fulfilling a promise made by the game's developer in recent weeks to provide the Mac and PC versions of the demo within a few hours of each other.
