Benchmarking dbx, preliminary results

Benchmarking dbx, preliminary results 02/05/2003 11:18 AM
Yesterday, I benchmarked dbx, native MySQL and ADOdb. The results might be interesting to some of you:
                Average Overhead
MySQL native 1.14 -
dbx 1.37 20% (flags=DBX_RESULT_INDEX)
ADOdb 1.45 27% (numeric indexes)
dbx 1.53 34% (default flags)
This reveals that dbx using default settings will provide no speedup over ADOdb because it also queries the field information and generates both associative and numeric indexes. The speedup of dbx over ADOdb is minimal when the dbx flags is set to DBX_RESULT_INDEX.

The benchmark algorithm used is the same one as that found at http://phplens.com/lens/adodb/ and if i have the time, i will upload the dbx benchmark source. Test system was a 800Mhz PIII running Win2000 with IIS and MySQL installed.

Preliminary Results of Survey of Musicians
http://ww w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=123

This weekend, the Pew Internet & American Life Project will present at a conference some early findings of an online survey they did of more than 2,700 musicians to gather their views on copyright and file-sharing issues. Among other things, these musicians are very divided about the problems and marketing potential of online file-sharing systems and they are not sure the recording industry campaign against illegal downloading will help them. Many of these artists themselves share some of their songs for free online and find that it helps them sell more CDs, draw bigger concert audiences, and get more playing time on commercial radio.

Y-HPC Linux

Yellow Dog Linux maker Terra Soft Solutions Inc. noted Wednesday that it has achieved what it calls "preliminary Linux support" for Apple's Xserve G5 and Cluster Node systems. The support was achieved using an in-house beta version of Y-HPC, a version of its PowerPC-optimized Linux operating system offering 64-bit support designed to work with PowerPC 970 processors. Terra Soft plans to offer Yellow Dog Linux, the 32-bit version of their operating system, in mid-June. Y-HPC will be offered on 2 DVDs as "a rolling, continually improved, date-stamped product."

Cory Doctorow: The preliminary ballot for the Nebula Award came out yesterday, and my novel Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom is one of six novels that made the first cut. Between now and Feb 15, my colleagues in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) will vote on a final ballot. It's exhilarating to have just gotten this far, but it will be truly amazing if my first novel makes the final ballot. If you're a SFWA member, I hope you'll remember the book when your preliminary ballot arrives in the mail!
Paladin of Souls -- Lois McMaster Bujold (Eos, Oct03)
Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom -- Cory Doctorow (Tor, Feb03)
Omega -- Jack McDevitt (Ace, Nov03)
Perfect Circle -- Sean Stewart (Small Beer Press, Jun04)
Conquistador -- S.M. Stirling (Roc, Feb04)
The Knight -- Gene Wolfe (Tor, Jan04)

Varley's Red Thunder qualifies for

Varley's Red Thunder qualifies for
preliminary Nebula ballot
12/22/2003 10:11 AM
I grew up on John Varley's short fiction (careful readers of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom will note several loving tributes to Varley's work), and still return to collections like The Barbie Murders, Blue Champagne and the magnificent The Persistence of Vision nearly every year, re-reading those stories and marvelling anew at how deft and clever Varley's hand is.

I just noticed that Red Thunder, the second Varley tribute to Heinlein (the first was the Hugo-nominated Steel Beach, a mind-crogglingly wild, funny and clever tribute to The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress) has qualified for the preliminary Nebula ballot, which is proof that we live in a just universe indeed.

Red Thunder is a tribute to Heinlein's juvie novels, particularily the classic boys-own-adventure tale Rocket Ship Galileo, about three plucky, ethincally diverse, multi-gender adolescent heroes who rescue the US space program.

Varley manages this amazing trick of simultaneously writing a juvie book -- this would be a hell of a book for your favorite precocious thirteen-year-old -- and writing a book about juvie books, a book for those of us who grew up on the juvies of yesteryear. Link

The FCC's confidentiality request extends to September 24th, so I would expect Dell to make an announcement before then, at least.
