Pro Coffee Roasting

Pro Coffee Roasting 08/20/2004 02:29 PM

tonx_coffee.jpg imageMy buddy Tonx has what he calls "the second-coolest job in the world." As a barista at Seattle's Victrola Coffee, it's his job to hand-roast the daily coffee blends in the huge Diedrich IR-12 roaster they have on site, and he's written a great walk through (with pictures) of everything involved. And really, how can you go wrong with a machine that uses a infrared gas-powered afterburner to roast up to the 30 pounds of beans at once?

Unless it involves a day care and a drunken misunderstanding, you really can't.

Minor Washington state quake. It's been a while since I've experienced and earthquake, so when tonight's little one hit my hometown (a mere 3.2) I was a little shocked (and a little excited). I was also really impressed with the seemingly instantaneous response by the USGS and the University of Washington's GeoPhysics Dept. on their websites classifying it.

In the olden-days (eg- pre-Internet) I'd have to wait for the early morning news to find out any information about it, but through the miracle of HTTP I have all the info I want mere seconds after the event. In fact, less than 15 minutes after the quake the USGS site had over 260 responses on their website about the quake from people who felt it and left comments on their site.

I wonder if there are other sites that help classify and/or disseminate information about other naturally occurring phenomenon (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.)... anyone, anyone?

European retailer, and Euro.rebelscum.com sponsor, The Hairy Fairy has sent out word that this year's Christmas special is currently known to retailers as "Holiday Set 2004 Jawas". More word on this as we receive it. * We have heard a rumour that these Jawas will come as the Three Wise Men, possibly inspired by the 1994 Lucasfilm Christmas card (click on the thumbnail above). Thanks Gus.

Streaming media patent provokes pain.

I got excited when I saw Marc Canter's post about how to add a SoundBlox to your site, as I think it might be cool to add one to my Ear Reverends music site. Then, I saw this article on streamingmedia.com, Patently Absurd? Streaming Users face Acacia Patent Fight. Ouch!

Still excited, but ouch!!!! (Coincidentally, this morning, I started reading The Future of Ideas, by Lawrence Lessig, which I know discusses these kinds of patent = ouch!! situations.)

[the iCite net development blog]

This media streaming patent is nothing compared to the copyrights laws in this country. I own all of the music I have available in my jukebox (available in my left hand gutter - created by SoundBlox.)  I've actually bought multiple copies of many of those classics and reggae hits.

But is it legal for me to be offering up those tunes for you to listen to - on my blog?

I don't know - you tell me.

"We're giving them the street." So the police officer said say as my daughter and I arrived at Central Square in Cambridge at11:30 this evening. The police pulled back the restraining fences and the crowd packed Massachusetts Ave. solid where we watched couples enter the Town Hall — the first same-sex couples in America to be issued marriage licenses fully legal according to state law. (Oh, stop your quibbling! We're the first state to make it legal and I'm going to enjoy that.) WOOHOO! The crowd was enormous. We were crammed together from the street all the way up the...

Parliament has enacted a law allowing the British Library to scrape and archive British websites.
"This new legislation will now mean that a vital part of the nation's published heritage will be safe," said MP Chris Mole, who supported the move.

The archive will comprise selective "harvesting" from the 2.9 million sites that have "co.uk" suffixes.

Legal Downloads, Eh? 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
It’s all over the news that a Canadian judge has ruled that posting copyrighted works on a P2P network is not against the law. (I have no idea how long-lived that URI will be, Canadian newspapers are not very careful about their web-space). I wonder if the ruling extends to the Web? I would just totally love if it I could post the occasional excellent piece of music here, and I bet it would drive business to the artists and their published works; and I’d love it if some of the other people whom I’ve gotten close to via their writing were able to share some of their faves with me, too. Go, Judge Finckenstein!
