pre-eclampsia, a condition that kills hundreds of mothers-to-be each
year in the United States and leads to 15 percent of all premature
births, researchers say.

03/23/2005 07:50 PMAP - American women may be overusing treatments for symptoms of
menopause, including hormone therapies that can pose a risk, a
National Institutes of Health consensus panel said Wednesday. "For
women who don't have very serious symptoms, waiting it out may be the
best strategy," said Dr. Carol M. Mangione of the University of
California, Los Angeles.

'Escape-A-Date' ringtones help you lie
like an (unwired) dog
08/04/2004 01:47 PMCingular Wireless recently introduced an odd new tool for subscribers.
"Escape-a-Date" is touted as "the perfect service to use when you are
afraid that your blind date may not be just right for you." Users
schedule a "rescue" phone call at a pre-set time which tells them
exactly how to lie their way into speedy escape. Eight
randomly-generated humorous scripts are offered, here's a snip from
one:
Hey, this is your escape-a-date call. If you're looking for an excuse,
I got it. Just repeat after me, and you'll be on your way!
"Not again! Why does that always happen to you? ... Alright, I'll
be right there." Now tell 'em that your roommate got locked out,
and you have to go let them in. Good luck!"
It's actually not the first, um, wireless falsification enabler.
Virgin Mobile USA also offers subscribers the option to set up a
"Rescue Ring" to escape any situation -- romantic or otherwise -- by
simply scheduling a time when they want to receive an automated system
call. "Save yourself from bad dates, boring meetings, or any other
situation that needs interrupting," says the Virgin website. Emily's
Ringtoni
a blog has more on the mobile fakeout meme. Doug Rushkoff has more
on the Cingular service over at
The Feature. And don't forget the web classic,
Rejection Line. But really,
people -- WTF ever happened to honesty? (

IBM Wants To Predict The Weather 300

02/10/2004 01:27 PMIBM and the University of California at Irvine are working on a
superc
omputer that can predict the planet's climate changes up to 300 years
in the future. They claim it's a revolutionary breakthrough in
computing, but neglect to mention that part of the reason they're
probably working on it is to
surpass
the power of a Japanese weather predicting computer that made
headlines a year and a half ago. I'm sure that it won't be all that
long until another supercomputer comes along and beats this one as
well.

MATT GALLANT -- Also, your dead
relatives love you and don't want you to be sad. Today, Midway has
shipped Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy for PS2 and Xbox. Psi-Ops is
a third-person stealth/action game where you play as psychic commando
Nick Scryer. Your mission is to go undercover (hint: don't tell anyone
your last name) and infiltrate "The Movement", a terrorist
organization that usually strikes about fifteen minutes after
breakfast and then again late in the evening.
As you can see in the screenshot, you'll have the power to lift
things and set them on fire using only the powers of your mind and
melodramatic poses. Hopefully Nick will also have to shout "BEHOLD!"
to make with the burning and flinging. Nick can also learn to
telepathically control enemies, do some remote viewing of inaccessible
locations, see auras, and drain brains. You'll also have an array of
conventional weapons which you can fire using only the power of your
index finger, for when your brain gets tired.

Cure

millenium so far. A cure for cancer! all cancer! Posted as a side
article on bbc news april 8th.
Whenever I read an article about a cure for peanut allergies (my
daughter has a life threatening nut allergy), the articles always
quote some researcher as saying it'll happen "in five years."
Curious about the popularity of "in five years," I googled the
following terms:
"in two years" -- 1,320,000 results
"in five years" -- 1,420,000
"in ten years" -- 584,000
"in fifteen years" -- 59,000
"in twenty years" -- 176,000
"in fifty years" -- 74,300
"in a hundred years" -- 77,500
"in a thousand years" -- 56,300
"in ten thousand years" -- 3,370 (first hit is Cory!)
"in a hundred thousand years" -- 828
"in a million years" -- 202,000
"in a billion years" -- 5,410
"in a trillion years" -- 933
"in a quadrillion years" -- 51
"in a googol years" -- 38
"in a googolplex years" -- 2
"never" -- 296,000,000
"Never" wins by a huge margin, but "in five years" comes in second.

Scientists Claim To Successfully Predict
Earthquakes
Scientists Claim To Successfully Predict
Earthquakes
01/09/2004 09:50 PMWhen I first moved to California from New York, and expressed to
someone my concern about earthquakes, I was told that it's no
different than natural disasters like hurricanes that hit the east
coast. Of course, there is a very big difference: with a hurricane,
you know it's coming and can protect yourself or get the hell out of
town. Scientists have been working on ways to predict earthquakes for
years, with little success. Some say it can't be done. However, some
researchers are now claiming that they
successful
ly predicted the recent California earthquake and an earlier one in
Japan. The predictions are not pinpoint predictions, but suggest
a magnitude earthquake that is likely in a specific location within
the next nine months. Many researchers are skeptical, but others do
say that it's unlikely they were correct twice by dumb luck. Of
course, the researchers don't want to reveal all their predictions
publicly, because they say they don't want to spread fear and economic
hardship on certain areas. However, they do plan to work with "the
appropriate authorities" (whoever they may be) to continue to test
their methodology. In the meantime, they will leak one prediction (in
a sparsely populated area): a possible 6.4 magnitude quake in an area
south of the Mojave Desert sometime before Sept. 5.
