Make it or break it time for Tapwave as they confirm
a June 24th retail launch date in CompUSA stores for their
PalmOS-based gaming PDA Zodiac. Tapland confirms that the Zodiac will
have at least a 4-foot dedicated shelf space and a full marketing
rollout with all the usual ads and promotions, I would imagine. It's
not a CompUSA exclusive, either -- both J&R and Amazon have
started dropping information about their intention to carry the
Zodiac, as well. I don't have huge hopes for the Zodiac; I hate to be
such a fuddy-duddy about it, but I just can't see them blowing up
without the support of the major game publishers. Still, if they can
capture the Palm purchasers who wouldn't mind playing a game or
two on the side, they might be able to carve out a nice little niche
for themselves.

Online Stores That Accept Checks
Online Stores That Accept Checks
07/06/2004 05:27 AMAs more people worry about online credit card fraud and identity
theft, while e-commerce providers worry about attracting new users,
some are going to a much more old fashioned method of accepting
payment:
they're taking
a checks. With a company named I4 Commerce acting as the
middleman, many e-commerce sites now offer a "bill me later" option.
I4 Commerce does a quick instant credit check and then allows the
purchase (if the credit check goes smoothly). The buyer then receives
an invoice a few days later which they can pay by check. I4 pays the
merchant directly, so they don't have to worry if the individual pays
or not. I4 claims that a very low rate (4%) default on their
payments, but as one person in the article notes, that may just be
because scammers haven't realized the potential yet. Also, the
article doesn't note how I4 makes its money, and it seems likely that
they're charging interest on these "bill me later" loans (as well as a
transaction fee from the merchants using their system). Without any
of the details being provided, it sounds a little questionable. There
are an awful lot of "payday loan" type places that offer easy loans
with ridiculously onerous terms. It's possible that I4's terms are
perfectly reasonable (and the low default rate suggests that's true),
but it's odd that the article doesn't clearly state what they are.
Checking out their site turns up that there is, indeed, a
17.99% interest
rate, but only for customers who choose not to pay the full amount
within 25 days. So, the reality of this isn't so much that online
stores are accepting checks, but that they're accepting "instant
credit" provided by this one company.

Why Online Music Download Stores Are
Half Full
Why Online Music Download Stores Are
Half Full
01/19/2004 03:04 PMFor all the hype about the various music download stores, people are
still (rightfully so) complaining that many are missing songs from
popular artists, or that certain songs are only available at some
download stores, but not at others. Here's a good explanation of all
the
contractual
difficulties associated with putting songs online for sale at
these download stores. Part of the issue is really just one of legacy
contracts that didn't take into account the potential for downloadable
music stores. While the musicians, lawyers, agents, and record label
execs fight this all out, most people will continue to just use free
file sharing networks instead.

DOJ Doesn't See Any Antitrust Violations
In Failed Online Music Stores
12/23/2003 06:56 PMThe Justice Department has
ended antitrust investigations into the music industry's
early attempts at online music stores, MusicNet and Pressplay -
both of which were seen as pretty disastrous failures. The original
complaint was that the music industry was making it hard for others to
offer music online in order to help boost sales of their own efforts.
What happened was the industry's own efforts didn't go very far, and
now just about everyone seems to be doing deals with the industry to
set up download stores, so it's not too hard to see why the DOJ is
shutting down the investigation. Of course, another investigation
could be made if anyone decides to look into the question of why the
industry is holding a universal line on the price per song download.

Canadian Recording Industry Trying To

Canadian Recording Industry Trying To
Kill Online Music Stores
04/18/2005 11:29 PMIt's almost comical to see each mis-step that the recording industry
makes in trying to figure out how to deal with online music. The
latest bizarre move is up in Canada, where the industry has been
freaking out ever since a judge suggested that people downloading
music
weren
't actually breaking the law -- especially in light of the fees
charged to all blank media sales to cover such copying. The various
groups who manage such tariffs are putting in requests that would
amount to
appr
oximately 40% of the revenue brought in from online music stores
such as iTunes. Yes, 40%. You have to assume they're going on the
theory that if they get to ask for some money for nothing, they might
as well ask for a lot. Hopefully these fees will get thrown out,
because if they don't, it will basically kill off legal music download
stores in Canada and just send more people to the "free" alternatives.
