Open Textbook Project

Open Textbook Project 12/09/2003 01:28 PM
Open Textbook Project
http://otp.inlimine.org/

The mission of the open textbook project is to develop openly copyrighted (copylefted) textbooks using the free software development model. The books, developed collaboratively, would be freely available to download, modify, print and distribute. Not only are textbooks unavailable to a great number of students in the US and abroad simply due to cost, few textbooks are universally suitable for courses in any given subject and many are simply sub-standard. The Open Textbook Project aims to address these issues by using a collaborative development model which has proven its effectiveness in the world of free software.

More on the Open WorldCat Project

More on the Open WorldCat Project 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

Kate points us to the Open WorldCat site for more information about the project (mentio ned here last week).

"The goal is to help libraries provide faster, more convenient service to current and potential users through familiar Web channels, and to point more people—even those who don't typically visit libraries—to library collections for the material they want. The pilot promotes the value and relevance of libraries on a scale far greater than any library or group could achieve alone....

OCLC will carefully evaluate feedback from pilot participants and focus groups as well as click-through statistics and other metrics to understand the pilot's strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the results will be considered in the light of the question, 'Does this help libraries and their users?'...

The Open WorldCat pilot is available to libraries that have contributed cataloging records and/or ownership information to WorldCat."

Further reading includes buildin g on a success, how it works, frequently asked questions, and how to get involved. It looks like libra ries have to manually opt out of the service, but I would argue that libraries should wait and see how the project goes before pulling their plug.

Unfortunately, we found that a Google search for " "da vinci code" libraries" didn't produce any WorldCat records in the first four pages. I know that makes us bad librarians for not reading further, but we're simulating patron usage. ;-) We also tried to use the example OCLC shows in their explanation for how it works, and we didn't come up with anything there, either, and that's adding the word "libraries" to the search. I guess we'll have to keep testing this to see when and how the records do appear in searches. If you come across searches that produce WorldCat results in Google, please me know!

Open Audiobooks Project

Open Audiobooks Project 08/11/2004 11:15 PM

We've seen a couple audiobook projects popup around Creative Commons licensed books recently (Lessig's audiobook and Doctorow's audiobook), but this new Open Audiobooks Project aims to collect recordings of public domain books. They're kicking off the project by recording Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. If you're a fan of the book, have a good voice, and want to contribute to the project, sign on their site.

A new LinuxDevices.com article provides an overview of Daffyd Walter's open robot reference design project, better known as the Open Automaton Project. The article points out the differences between Walter's goal of an actual hardware implementation and the goals of other standards projects such as the RETF and OROCOS - whose goals are primarily concerned with APIs and software. There are also photos and a nice block diagram that gives an overview of the entire implementation.

Getting good PR for your open source
project
04/20/2004 12:45 PM
I get asked this question at least once a week: "How do I get my open source project onto your radar screen?" The question is often accompanied by a lament about how such-and-such project gets endless press while the questioner's equally valuable one gets ignored. Public relations is where volunteer-run open source projects usually fall down hardest, even worse than documentation, so here's a little primer on how to get the media to write nice things about what you're doing. There will be an IRC discussion about promoting your open source project Saturday, April 24, at 2000 UTC. IRC server = events.oftc.net, #promo.

Project/Open 3.0.beta8 (Default branch) 03/30/2005 08:50 PM
Project/Open is a project management and PSA (Professional Services Automatization) system for companies in the consulting, engineering, advertising and localization industries. It covers the entire project life cycle from sales (CRM-light), staffing, execution (timesheet, controlling, incidents, discussions, and file storage) to invoicing and payment. The P/O architecture is designed for mission-critical applications with a rock-solid infrastructure and a sophisticated role-based permission system.
Changes:
This version comes with an enhanced Windows installer and fixes a number of bugs. It includes hierarchical classifications for projects and companies, and a rich "preconfigured" sample company that demonstrates the product features. Several user guides are available in the download zone.

Library Lookup for Open WorldCat

Matthew Eberle of Library Techlog returns to the blogosphere with a heckuva post:

Da Vinci Code

"Hi y'all. Just saw in Library Journal that OCLC is making some 2,000 records available through Google. This is very cool and the kind of teamwork Gary Price for one has been urging for a while. I've stuck this project together with John Udell's Library Lookup bookmarklet to get something that moves toward a universal library lookup.

Here's the OCLC WorldCat record you can find through Google for the Da Vinci Code.

Here's the S emi-universal Library Lookup that should go from Amazon to a Google search for WorldCat records." [Library Techlog]

In the immortal words of Keanu, "Whoa!" And it works quite nicely, thank you very much!
