FireWire Depot has introduced the Newnex FireNEX-MX, an optical repeater for transmitting FireWire 400 and 800 data signals over multi mode optical fiber cable up to 3,280 feet long. It's slightly larger than a deck of cards and contains two 6-pin FireWire 400 ports and one FireWire 800 port. According to the FireWire Depot Web site, the Newnex FireNEX-MX will be in stock on Oct. 11 for US$850, with optical cables available in lengths from 32 to 3,280 feet, starting at $65.

FireWire Depot announced on Wednesday the arrival of four new products: the Fi reWire 800 CardBus PCMCIA adapter (US$89.99), the 3- port FireWire 800 repeater/hub ($89.99), the 3- port FireWire 800 PCI card adapter ($67.99) and the Fi reWire 800/USB 2.0 combo to IDE bridge board ($84.95). The CardBus PCMCIA adapter features two 9-pin FireWire 800 ports, one 6-pin FireWire 400 port and a DC input power connector. It comes with one FireWire 400 cable and one FireWire 800 cable, requiring Mac OS 9.x or Mac OS 10.x for the former and Mac OS X v10.2.4 or higher for the latter. The adapter also works only with an open 32-bit CardBus slot.

Just thought I'd let you know that we've put up a new version of the ISBN database. We've done a lot of work to pull works with variant titles together (which helps with The Innovator's Dilemma) and made the retrievals consistent, so that any ISBN in a group retrieves that same ISBN group (which also helps with I's D). We've learned a lot about how ISBNs are used (and misused).

Thanks for the update, Thom. Sure enough, my original examples now work as advertised. Here's what Thom was referring to:

There are a few caveats here. First, the one-to-many algorithm doesn't seem to be fully bi-directional. In the example above, we'd like to get from 0066620694, a paperback, to 0875845851, a hardcover. But although we can get from 0875845851 to 0066620694, we can't get from 0066620694 to 0875845851. I love the idea of building RAIDs out of floppy drives -- I just with this guy had built a BIGGER RAID. If he'd clustered 256 old iMacs with four floppy drives each, he would have had a gigabyte floppy RAID -- all the power and reliability of a Jaz cartridge, in a package that fills a roller-rink. In fact, you could employ kids on roller-blades (like Kozmo did!) to wheel around the shelves, replacing dud floppies with fresh ones. Link (via MeFi)
