Apple sues over Internet info leak

Apple sues over Internet info leak 12/19/2004 03:11 PM
Apple has filed suit against unnamed individuals who it says have tipped Apple's hand about new products by posting details on the Internet. The seven-page civil complaint -- filed on Dec. 13 with the Santa Clara County California Superior Court -- raises more questions than it answers, however.

Steve Jobs is someone who takes his surprise product launches seriously. In fact, it was a bit surprising yesterday when an Apple representative gave much more info than usual concerning Apple's work in the mobile phone space (though, this may have been misinterpreted by many who are talking it up today). It's completely out of character. What's much more in character, is sending the pack of lawyers after anyone who dares to break the embargo on information, and today Apple sued some unnamed people for releasing info about their products prior to launch. Are they going to sue their own VP in charge of products who made the mobile phone slip?

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
I've complained in the past about the annoyanc e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo, the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco over at CBS Marketwatch has noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is collecting public information. However, if the info was given to an individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.

Apple Backs Blu-ray Tech

Apple Backs Blu-ray Tech 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

This is a big win for Sony:

The Sony Corp. and Panasonic led Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) welcomed Apple Computer Inc. to its board of directors on Thursday. The Blu-ray Disc format now seems more certain of being accepted as the future standard for storing High Definition movies, photos and other digital content.

There's been a huge media buzz surrounding Virginia Tech's Power Mac G5-based parallel-computing "supercluster." Comprising 1,100 dual-processor G5 systems, Virginia Tech's system is clocked as the third-fastest supercomputing system in the world, at a price that's only a fraction of what other supercomputing systems in its class cost. Now Apple has posted a profile on its Web site of the new system, dubbed "System X."

'VoiceOver' technology
08/04/2004 11:24 AM
The Apple Developer Connection has posted new online documentation entitled U niversal Access: Computers That Everyone Can Use. The docs outline Apple's Universal Access technology -- developed to enable users with disabilities to use the Mac -- and provides some detail about Universal Access technology coming to the next major release of Mac OS X, v10.4, code-named "Tiger," called 'VoiceOver." VoiceOver is the spoken interface coming to Tiger that provides users with visual disabilities to have read aloud the contents of documents and an audible description of their workspace. While these documents are specifically created to help developers understand how the technology works, Apple has posted more general VoiceOver" information to its Web site. Apple first provided some preliminary information about VoiceOver -- known simply as Spoke n Interface -- in March.

Places Online
http://www.placesonline.org

The Association of American Geographers has gathered an array of websites that depict environments, people and life around the world. There is a high standard for inclusion in the site: the sites must be image and content heavy, and must be "primary" sites, as opposed to sites that only direct users to a list of links. Places Online is searchable, and also can be navigated by using an interactive map; the first level is by region/continent and the second level is broken down into countries and cities. Most sites are native to the region that is being explored, thereby giving a local flavor and perspective on the locales, events and experiences displayed.

when faraway places f*ck up NYC

when faraway places f*ck up NYC 08/09/2004 08:08 PM
Boom! Forget terror attacks, the real reason for an orange alert in NYC has to do with ... rocks. I'll bet you've never heard of Cumbr e Vieja. In fact, if the first hit on a google s earch for something is a PDF, you know it's obscure. (It's a volcano in the Canaries). If it erupts, it'll spell the end for Washington, New York and Boston (and parts of Europe will get a bit wet.) Hoo!

Now, short of hoping it will go away, there's nothing you can do, because it will take 35 million years to dismantle the dangerous bits of rock. Instead, the boffins are talking about evacuating the east coast. Yet more obscure places you wish you could forget menacing the future of the US, hey?
