Revamps to Commenting and RSS

Revamps to Commenting and RSS 02/15/2003 08:39 PM

In my previous post, I asked that users who requested my old RSS file in news aggregators update to the new link. Phil left a comment which raised a good point. From what he said, I have changed my error handling to return an HTTP message of 301 Moved Permanently and redirect to the new RSS feed when the old feed is requested. I've tested the results with Syndirella and it worked. I could tell it worked because my access logs showed my request as one for the new URL, and not the old URL, even though I requested the old one. In the past I would have received an error code as well. However, let me know if you have any problems.

Also new, I completed the non-dynamic commenting system. Most of you will never see it because your browser supports the dynamic version, but this will affect a few people.

AOL advertising buyout

AOL advertising buyout 06/29/2004 03:20 PM
AOL has purchased Advertising.com in an all cash deal to help them to increase their online advertising revenue. Early figures indicate that industry wide website advertising revenue could rise to 6.78 billion by the end of the year. It appears that AOL is becoming less focused on just advertising on their own websites and will be moving on to making their mark on the rest of the internet. It will also be interesting to see how this affects the volume of advertising that already exists on their own portals and websites.

IAC announces Ask Jeeves buyout 03/22/2005 03:32 PM
InterActiveCorp on Monday announced it has agreed to buy the fourth largest search engine in the United States, Ask Jeeves, for $1.85 billion. According to the deal, InterActiveCorp will issue 1.2668 shares of its common stock for each share of Ask Jeeves stock in a tax-free transaction. InterActiveCorp intends to buy back at least 60 percent of the shares it plans to issue for acquisition through previously authorized share repurchase programs to offset a substantial portion of the dilution from the transaction with cash. “Joining IAC will enable us to play on a much larger field," Ask Jeeves CEO Steve Berkowitz said. "We are excited about the opportunity to serve as the connection between IAC’s constellation of leading online properties to share users and content. Ask Jeeves will now be in an even stronger position to aggressively grow market share.”

MCI Accepts Verizon Buyout

MCI Accepts Verizon Buyout 03/29/2005 08:00 PM
MCI announced Tuesday that its board had decided to accept an updated offer from Verizon rather than Qwest, which should end a month and a half standoff between the three companies as well as shareholders. The new offer is for $7.6 billion in cash and stock - about $1 billion above Verizon's previous offer. The  accepted offer is still lower than the 8.45 billion offered by Qwest. Why not go with the highest bidder? MCI has expressed concerns over Qwest's financial strength, including the fact that it would need to finance the takeover. One finds it hard to see how any of these mergers will benefit the consumer.

The New York Times confirms the bad news: Google is planning an IPO. And even worse, they've been discussing a merger with Microsoft.
