EarthLink finds rampant spyware, trojans 04/15/2004 06:33 PM
Internet service provider EarthLink and Webroot Software released a report on Thursday that said an average of almost 28 spyware programs are running on each computer. More serious, Trojan horse or system monitoring programs were found on more than 30 percent of all systems scanned, raising fears of identity theft.

Spams, Phishing, and Trojans

Spams, Phishing, and Trojans 05/05/2004 02:36 AM

This Netcraft article titled Phisher Kings compares growth of phishing with that of spamming (via Paymen ts News).  It's not surprising to me since I think phishers who rely mostly on social engineering used to be spammers.  However, phishers using trojans, like the one described in this Code Fish Spam Watch article, are not.  They are hackers using e-mail to find their victims.

Using trojans to harvest passwords and credit card numbers is, fortunately, not as deadly as it might seem at first glance.  Why?  Because trojans require more technical knowledge, higher cost of maintenance, and higher cost of labor necessary to mine the returned data.  It's all glory and little in return.

In comparison, phishers with spamming background tend to focus on what really matters, the ROI numbers.  Instead of wasting days and weeks to write and finetune trojans, they use a web page editor to create their lures and receive their loots in ready to use form.

There is a more dangerous group of potential phishers we need to keep an eye out for: telemarketers.  While most spammers operate blindly, telemarketers leverage information to choose and attack their victims more intelligently.  Phishers with telemarketing background are more likely to be spear-phishers, phishers who target rich victims with tailored attacks.

When they come for you, they will know your name, where you live, what finanicial services you are using, and more.

Win DRM hides malicious trojans, RIAA
deploys infected music on P2P
12/30/2004 04:48 PM
Cory Doctorow: According to PCWorld and TechDirt, Windows DRM contains a flaw that allows for attakcers to create music files that contain trojans that attack your computer when you play them, and moreover, the usic industry has hired a company called Overpeer to flood the P2P networks with infected fake music files.
Overpeer is the same company that the recording industry has hired in the past to dump fake versions of songs on file sharing networks. What the article doesn't answer is whether or not the industry hired Overpeer to dump spyware on the network as well, but it's likely they're pleased either way. Overpeer defends their actions by saying that anyone obviously deserves what they get because, obviously, they were looking for unauthorized files. It's not clear that everyone would agree. Sneaking malicious files onto someone's computer because "they deserved it!" doesn't seem like a very good justification. What may be even more important to this story, however, is the revelation of just how easy it is, thanks to a huge loophole in Microsoft's copy protection technology, to include a malicious file with an audio or video file. Basically, because Windows DRM needs to look for a license, all anyone needs to do is point that license to a website that loads malicious content and off you go. Thank you Microsoft, for creating a huge loophole that will probably make sure millions of new computers are loaded with spamming, DDOSing trojans shortly.

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AM
It appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months back when they released an anti-spyware tool that just so happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now default to notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be "adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in the first place.

AOL Offers Spyware Stopper... Just After
They Started Offering Spyware
04/22/2004 02:36 AM
Just a few weeks after saying that they're going to start bundling spyware/adware with their instant messenger product, AOL announces their latest anti-spyware application. While we've been complaining about anti-spyware from ISPs that just points out the spyware, AOL claims that this version will disable (though not delete) the spyware. I wonder if it will catch the spyware that AOL installs themselves.

Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
We didn't write about Yahoo's new "anti-spyware" toolbar that they announced last week, because it seemed to receive plenty of hype, and there were no real reviews of how it worked. There are so many so-called anti-spyware applications out there that don't actually stop spyware and adware for fear of upsetting marketing companies or out of worries that actually stopping spyware may make some applications stop working (upsetting the user), that we figured Yahoo's anti-spyware app (hype and all) probably wouldn't be much to bother with. It certainly looks like that may be the case. eWeek is now reporting that Yahoo tries to dance the careful dance of not upsetting certain companies who threate n to sue people who call their application spyware. Of course, the situation is even more complex because Claria (who you probably know as Gator - despite their attempt to change their name to shake that spyware label) is also a partner of Yahoo. So, it's really not surprising that the default setting for Yahoo's anti-spyware app won't actually remove services like Gator or WhenU. Instead, Yahoo's spyware remover claims these programs are "adware" and will only remove them if you click and extra check box each time you run the program. In other words, once again, you can't trust a provider of anti-spyware software, because they're playing both sides of the fence: partnering with providers on the one hand, and then offering weak removal products on the other. If Yahoo were serious about removing spyware from the computers of users they would refuse to partner with companies that used surreptitious tactics to be installed on computers. Instead, they want to look good to users in the front, while letting in spyware/adware from partners through the backdoor.

Harvard hosts a debate on whether or not
IT Is done
04/09/2004 04:11 PM

Apropos the mournful postings below on the state of IT... On Wednesday May 19 Harvard at 12:30 Eastern Time is hosting a debate on the question "Does IT Matter?"  I plan to attend (via telephone).  Because it is the business school the debate is priced for those who are already rich and/or work for the rich.  And because it is the business school the focus of the debate is probably going to be "does IT matter to profit-seeking corporations?"  I might try to get a few words in edgewise about how IT might be more transformative for poor countries than for rich countries.  In the U.S. we have magnificent roads, stores everywhere, and seemingly 3 SUVs per citizen.  So being able to do a transaction electronically isn't that much of a time-saver.  Someone in the Third World who has to ride a chicken bus over a terrible road for an entire day is going to appreciate being able to do a transaction from his local Internet cafe a lot more than someone who only saved a 10-minute ride in his Cadillac Escalade.

"The NY Times is now providing its own RSS feeds, with several new categories including media and advertising, most-emailed, real estate, theater, Times on the Trail, multimedia, theater, Circuits, Week in Review and the Sunday magazine section. Unfortunately the education, dining and wine feeds and perhaps others are gone. The continuing feeds redirect, so most aggregators should adust automatically." [Scripti ng News]
