06/16/2004 11:33 AMMy colleague John Paczkowski alerts me to an interesting development
in the Bush administration's efforts to prevent Oracle from buying PeopleSoft. Gary
Reback, a lawyer for PeopleSoft, is posting
daily write-ups of the antitrust trial that's taking place in San
Francisco.
This is a smart PR move for PeopleSoft. Reback is a well-known
antitrust lawyer (he was one of the major instigators of the original
government action against Microsoft's monopoly abuses). This is is
client's perspective, of course, but it's a fascinating one.

Monday morning's
newsthat Oracle will buy
PeopleSoft for a small premium over Oracle's most recent offer was
almost the ultimate in anticlimaxes. It was a given, once the U.S.
antitrust lawsuit against the deal failed in early fall, that a buyout
would happen unless an unexpected white knight showed up to buy
PeopleSoft.
This deal should have been done a long time ago.
