Biggest Online Gamers? Women Over 40
02/10/2004 09:17 PMWhile the general impression most people have of online gamers is
teenaged boys shooting each other in digitized worlds, it turns out
that it's
women over the age of
40 who spend the most time playing online games. The women who
regularly play video games say it takes away from other activities
such as "watching TV or movies, reading or being physically active."
Even more interesting, those women gamers are night owls. Over 25%
are found online between midnight and 5am. Of course, as you might
guess, the type of games played tend more towards puzzle and word
games, but it still might not be what you'd expect. So, forget the
early
20s male gamer, when do we see sponsorship opportunities for the
over 40 female gamers?

Beyond Hardcore Gamers: Kids, Women, the
Middle-Aged
06/10/2004 02:57 PMThere's no shortage of articles on the video game industry
targeting
non-gamers (usually women) as the next new market for games. But
you'd think that the industry might want to avoid
calling their
new target market "bored housewives" even if it's in jest.
Looking beyond the "bored housewives" market, though, the next target
for video games may be
therapeutic games for kids and the middle-aged. Really just
a subset of educational games, therapeutic games can train people to
overcome their fears, relax from stress, or teach kids to cope with
their ADD -- and are probably a bit more lucrative than learning how
to touchtype.

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AMCory Doctorow:
The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the
Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in
game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all
seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it
will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These
people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with
players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live
"actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially
commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty
slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other
than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an
Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game
so far.

Look At That: There Are Women Online Too
Look At That: There Are Women Online Too
04/29/2004 02:42 PMNot quite sure that this is really all that surprising, but Yahoo! has
put together a study (mainly targeted at their advertisers) pointing
out that
women
actually use the internet too. In fact, it's the "leading media
of choice" among women, and overall comes only after work, sleep, and
spending time with family as being the most important time spent. The
study notes that women use the internet at work, and are good at
multitasking - having work-related and non-work-related sites open at
the same time and flipping back and forth between the two. They found
that women believe surfing non-work sites at work is fine, since they
tend to do more work outside of the office as well - and they're also
spending more time at the office. The folks at Yahoo! seem positively
shocked that women (gasp!) actually use
search as well.
"The other thing that I think that was a revelation [for us] and that
has been a common consensus is that women are task-oriented, but this
research shows that they do use the Internet for searching and
browsing--it's not just for destination-related activities." And to
think, before this, Yahoo! apparently thought that only men used
search. Maybe all the women have been over at Google...

Online Marketers Try To Understand Women
Online Marketers Try To Understand Women
05/05/2004 12:04 AMAmazing. Last week we joked about Yahoo
realizi
ng that women use the internet too, and now Salon has an article
on the same conference looking at
exactly how to market to women online. In both cases
the conference comes off as this sort of stunning world where it turns
out to be a surprise that women actually use the internet. Why is
this so shocking? Even more to the point, why is it so surprising
that you can't classify all women into a single group? Did marketers
really assume that all women only went online to research cleaning
products? It's pretty sad that a conference was needed to explain all
this, and it will be even sadder watching these same marketers try to
take these "lessons" and turn them into new advertisements for women.
At the end of the Salon article there's quite a telling quote. A
young woman is asked: "How do you feel about Yahoo trying to get into
your life?" She responds: "They pay you enough, and you don't care."
Welcome to the internet. Advertising isn't about intrusiveness and
annoying people, it's about giving people something of value - whether
monetarily or otherwise.
