Kernel Mode Linux 2.4.31_001 (For Linux

06/05/2005 11:23 PM
Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables
the execution of user programs in a kernel mode.
In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can access
kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel
modules, user programs are executed as ordinary
processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual.
Although it seems dangerous, the safety of the
kernel can be ensured through such methods as
static type checking, software fault isolation,
and so forth.

(Linux 2.4 branch)
Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security
"hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new
features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes.
The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of
protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways
to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact
of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more
privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that
users may not see what others are doing.
Changes:
This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.

Linux Kernel 2.6.0 Released
12/19/2003 07:40 PMJust in case you've been offworld and somehow missed the news, Linus
announced the release of the version 2.6.0 of the Linux kernel
Wednesday. One
of the most significant changes to the Linux kernel for us robot folks
is the merging of much of uCLinux into the mainstream
kernel. This means 2.6 is going to become even more widespread in
robotics and other embedded applications.
For a more general description of what's new in the 2.6 kernel, check

New iPAQ Pocket PC
07/27/2004 02:43 AMI'll be honest I have a iPAQ one that I purchased last year. It was
a big waste of money. My laptop is with me about 90% of the time. I
play games on it on airplanes and try and figure out how to re-coup my
money. Someone needs to come up with a book on how to be productive
with a Pocket PC. I am sure their is one out there but I'd hate to
waste more money. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to buy a
tablet. I'm afraid it would be a waste of money.

See, I told you
guys I'd link to more HP stuff if it was worthwhile; namely, PDA
Buyer's Guide takes out the low-end of the new iPAQs, the rz1715
(codename: Lil' Rizzizzeal), and while they find it to exude the
trademark fit-and-finish of the HP iPAQ line, a lack of features
(compared to the last generation, even, not just the newly-release
iPAQs) makes the $275 suitable mostly for PDA tinkerers who just need
a Pocket PC for its core functions (Personal Information Management,
etc.)

08/31/2004 09:43 AMTrusted Reviews takes a gander at the HP iPaq
rx7815, a middle-range Pocket PC that HP is positioning as a "mobile
media" device, and they seem to come away somewhat impressed, although
to be honest it's sort of a hard review to read (in the 'figure out
how they feel' sense not the 'bad English' sense). As for features,
the rx3715 is strong enough, with integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (b)
and even a decent camera (which is to say, better than VGA), but I
think maybe the mezzo-mezzo tone of the review - and here is where I
go out a limb, perhaps - is indicative not of HP's failings with this
particular iPaq, but just a general malaise that is clouding our
feelings about PDAs. We know what they do, they do it fairly well, but
nobody is figuring out how to really make them any more useful.
To HP's credit, it does look like they are really trying to develop
some new software that does new, interesting things. It looks like
they're sort of succeeding.

Whoa, this is a crazy one.
There apparently had been rumors floating about of a new HP iPaq
Smartphone, called the RW6100, and pictures have surfaced on a Korean
website of what looks to be that very thing. What's interesting to me,
though, is that it appears to be a slider, although with just a keypad
underneath instead of a keyboard. It has a marked resemblance, in
fact, to the Samsung SGH-D410 we reviewed last week, although it looks
a lot bigger. Could be a very nice compromise between capability and
size if it all pans out.
I've had the HP iPaq h6315 - their newest, actually-released
Smartphone - in here for the last few days, and while I'll probably
give it a proper review here soon, it's cemented my notion that I'm
not that impressed with Windows Smartphones in the larger slate form
factor anymore. If you don't mind things being way too huge for
pockets, though, it's got a lot to offer.
