Jersey Girl
12/26/2004 07:03 PMLike Gigli, Jersey
Girl suffered unfairly at the box office because of the whole Bennifer
thing. I liked a couple of Kevin
Smith's previous films but the poor acting always bothered the
heck out of me (I think he and George Lucas have a similar tendency to
treat actors as props (but in different ways)), but the acting in
Jersey Girl was surprisingly good. And the kid in the movie was great.
Like most movie children, she was a bit precocious and interacted with
the rest of the characters as if she were an adult, but it worked
because she was essentially standing in for her mother in the eyes of
Affleck's character. Affleck has his moments as well...he can be a
surprisingly good actor when he wants to be.

Austin to New Jersey with Wireless
Austin to New Jersey with Wireless
05/03/2004 08:42 PMNew York Times staffer John Schwartz drives his daughter from Austin
to New Jersey in search of colleges and Wi-Fi: Schwartz is a keen
observer of the Wi-Fi scene, and he writes of his fairly easy process
of finding Wi-Fi hotspots along his long route. He includes a bit of
found poetry from the Flying J, one of the many thousands of truck
stops that are or will become hotspots over the next year: God Bless
America / Position Open / Wireless Available. Schwartz started in
Austin, and he also filed this article about the work being carried
out by Richard MacKinnon, Jon Lebkowsky, and a cast of dozens involved
in Austin Wireless City to spread free Wi-Fi across the town....

governor's aides: This is kind of funny, in a perverse kind of
way.
A state Commerce and Economic Growth Commission Web site link to
its "business resource center" took viewers Tuesday afternoon —
and maybe for much longer — to full-color, hard-core teen
pornography.
Learning of the cyber snafu, high-level state executives rushed to
try to shut it down. But they initially encountered confusion. The
porn popped up on some computers. On others, the link went to the
proper business site.
Smells like a DNS propogation issue.

New Jersey legalizes stem cell research
01/27/2004 10:57 PMNew Jersey has become the second state, after California, to legalize
stem cell research: What the law does do, according to Jersey City
Assemblywoman Joan Quigley, is allow researchers - private or public -

replicate these for continuing research. Under the law, people
undergoing fertility treatments can donate unwanted embryos for
scientific research. The law also requires doctors to offer the option
to potential parents under fertility treatments.

New Jersey Adds Absolutely Useless
Internet Component To Lottery
New Jersey Adds Absolutely Useless
Internet Component To Lottery
12/23/2003 02:44 AMYou may remember the New Jersey Lottery website because of their
slightly disturbing practice of
requiri
ng your mother's maiden name to sign up for a "VIP membership"
online. Now, however, they've gone a bit further in misunderstanding
the point of the internet. Apparently, after reading all the stories
about how online gambling is the big thing these days, someone at the
NJ Lottery decided it was time to add an "online component" to their
offerings. Of course, whoever decided to do so didn't seem to spend
much time figuring out what that internet component should be. If you
buy a certain instant lottery ticket in New Jersey, you get a "second
chance to win!" by
going online and playing a silly game that isn't a
game at all, because
the results are predetermined. Even
better: you don't have to go online at all. You can just ask the guy
who sold you the ticket to scan it and see if you're a winner. Also,
you can't buy the tickets online, or claim your winnings online - you
have to go back to the store for that. In other words, the online
component is
completely meaningless. It's just there so you
can go online and watch a little game blip across your screen. Of
course, for the privilege of nothing in particular, the tickets cost
$4, which seems a bit steep.
