Linksys says faster..FASTER!
01/04/2005 08:10 PMOver at CES, Linksys will be announcing a new series of 802.11g
products that integrate SRX, a new speed boosting feature.
Currently, 802.11g networks have a range of between 120 and 160 feet
and a transfer at 54mbps.
Linksys claims that the SRX enabled 802.11g products can provide 3
times the range (450 feet) and is 8 times faster (i.e. nearly USB 2
speed wireless).
It's completely compatible with other 802.11g and 802.11b networks.
The wireless router is expected to sell for $199 and each card around
$129 and should be available at stores shortly.

If you previously had Java 1.4.1 and the Java SDK installed, the new
Java 1.4.2 update from apple will upgrade the Java runtime to 1.4.2,
but will remove the previous 1.4.1 Java runtime and
SDK without upgrading the JDK. To build Java packages in Fink
you will need to go to
connect.apple.com and download the Java 1.4.2 SDK (free
registration required).
java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4
java.util.concurrent for Java 1.4
12/19/2004 03:06 PM
One of the shiniest new feature of Java 5.0 (aka Java 1.5) is a
rich set of concurrent
programming classes in java.util.concurrent (aka JSR 166),
much of which is a
direct port of Doug Lea's Concurrent
Programming in Java library. Since I don't have the
luxury of using Java
5.0 yet, I've resorted to using Doug's original library which is,
for the most part,
functionally equivalent to java.util.concurrent but not close
enough for comfort,
particularly since concurrency code tend to be very sensitive to
minor changes.
The good news is that Dawid Kurzyniec
backported
java.util.concurrent package to run under Java 1.4 and made it
available as open
source. Apparently Sun is letting this happen because it's
own code is based
on Doug's open source library.
There are some shortcomings but nothing much to cry over. My
only complaint
is that it doesn't use the java.util.concurrent package name which
means I'll have
to update the package names later (simple but still change
nonetheless). But
that I can see the technical and legal issues preventing that from
happening.
I am just glad someone did this.

dumb liberal arts major.) According to DSLreports. I'm running at 4.1

but downloading is pretty durn peppy. Why, my pornographic spam is
downloading in a fraction of the time that it used to! (Upload times
are still under 700kbps.) So, when will RCN start offering Voice over

Crackers Are Faster Than You
Crackers Are Faster Than You
08/18/2004 02:49 PMHere's a scary statistic that I hadn't considered before: SANS keeps a graph of
the amount of time you can have an unprotected PC on the Internet
before you get some kind of exploit probe. Since last year, this time
has gone from 40-60 minutes down to around 20-30 minutes, which is
less time than you usually need to download your service packs and
patches for a new install.
The average time between probes will vary widely from
network to network. Some of our submitters subscribe to ISPs which
block ports commonly used by worms. As a result, these submitters
report a much longer 'survival time'. On the other hand, University
Networks and users of high speed internet services are frequently
targeted with additional scans from malware like bots. If you are
connected to such a network, your 'survival time' will be much
smaller.
SANS includes a link to a PDF entitled 'Windows XP: Surviving the
First Day'. As always, a $60 broadband router/firewall box will deal
with most of these problems for you.

Watching TV. Faster.
Watching TV. Faster.
03/15/2003 04:04 PM
Buried in this story over at PCWorld on all the
unexpected gadgets that getting WiFi added to them, like a digital
camera from Sanyo and a handheld file server from Sony, is this: a new
DVD recorder from Matsushita that records television shows at 1.3
times faster than normal speed. Why? "That's slow enough to understand
what is going on but also cuts the time it takes to watch a TV show by
a quarter." Sounds crazy, but if you're a busy person, that'll skim
fifteen minutes off an hour-long show.
Here at Gizmodo we've got another trick for cramming more TV into
less time, though it only works with a TiVo or other digital video
recorder: turn on closed-captioning and watch the show on TiVo's
slowest fast-forward setting. The captions will still pop up, so you
won't miss what anyone's saying, but everything will happen in
double-speed, making it perfect for watching three episodes of Blind
Date in a half hour. And yes, we know how fucked up this is.
