First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

bluetooth.jpgIt's only a proof of concept for now, but Symantec's Security Response site is listing the first worm for Nokia Series 60 phones, called EPOC.Cabir. The worm transmits itself over open Bluetooth connections to other phones, copying itself over where it continues to search for other Bluetooth-enabled devices -- after copying itself to another, hidden directory from where it executes, meaning even deleting the trojan .SIS file and rebooting won't stop the worm from replicating.

Since EPOC.Cabir is proof of concept alone for now, there is no payload (like deleting all your contacts or something), besides the diminished battery life of a phone always actively searching and copying over Bluetooth. Don't get too worried, for now, but make sure you have disabled Bluetooth when not in use and never accept Bluetooth connections from unknown sources or open/execute files from unknown sources -- you know, all the basic network safety tips you should know from when we all collectively saved the internet from Outlook viruses.

Nokia Series 60 worm on the loose

Nokia Series 60 worm on the loose 06/15/2004 10:17 AM
EPOC.Cabir is a new worm that replicates on Nokia Series 60 phones. It drains the users battery by scanning for Bluetooth devices and sending itself to any nearby Bluetooth devices. It is spread as a .SIS file, which installs into the “Apps” directory. Once opened it copies itself to a directory that is not visible by default. It then runs from the new directory and requires a file manager applicated to be installed in order for it to be removed.

First Smartphone Worm Discovered

First Smartphone Worm Discovered 06/15/2004 05:08 AM
It's no surprise that this was coming, as many have been predicting it for quite some time, but an antivirus company today announced the first known computer worm for a smartphone. It doesn't sound all that likely to spread - as it only works on Symbian phones, and uses Bluetooth connections to travel. It tries to detect other Bluetooth phones and then jumps to the new phone. Still, it's a noteworthy moment, and we can expect many more smartphone worms and viruses to be on their way. It won't be long until you'll need anti-virus software for your phone as well, or you may discover that your phone starts calling people in your phonebook randomly. Of course, with that in mind, it kind of makes you wonder if it wouldn't make sense for anti-virus firms to fan the flames of just such a virus to open up a new line of business for themselves.

Nokia 8000 Series?

Nokia 8000 Series? 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

nokia_8xxx_3_small.jpgMy ability to decode Czech web sites not at all what it used to be, all I can tell you is that this looks like the Nokia 8000 (or 8xxx) and rumor has it it'll be available in three weeks. It's a slider and it's coated in shiny aluminium. It's also only slightly larger than a Swiss Army Knife, it appears. If you know anything else, please pass it along and perhaps there will be cookies and milk for you. More metal-coated pics after the jump. (Thanks, David!)

Bluetooth Worm

Bluetooth Worm 06/15/2004 11:46 AM
Symantec reports on a Bluetooth worm: It spreads itself on Nokia Series 60 phones and tries to install itself on any Bluetooth device it finds, reducing battery life for the infected phone. A recipient has to accept the file, apparently, for it to transmit. It's hard to delete because it hides itself in a directory that's not accessible to the average user. [link via Xeni Jardin]...

Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset HS-13w 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

nokia_hs-13w_narrow.jpg imageIn all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w); fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket, where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.
