Norway To Leave DVD Jon Alone 01/05/2004 01:45 PM
Following the second acquittal of "DVD Jon" Johansen last month for daring to create and release software that let him view DVDs he had purchased on his Linux machine, the Norwegian police have decided that they have little hope of winning should they appeal again and are dropping the case. Of course, you can still expect the recording industry to search for some friends in Norway to change the laws in their favor.

leave me just out of reach

leave me just out of reach 02/01/2005 09:52 PM

I just got off the phone with my manager.

The casting people loved me, and thought I gave a great reading, but . . . (wait for it) I'm not going to get a chance to bring The Script to life. The producers want to go in a different direction, and some of my essences (too smart for my own good, Passionate with a capital "P") worked against me. The tiny silver lining is that the people I read for know what I look like and what I'm bring to a role now. That's good, because there will be other shows . . . sigh.

I still haven't heard anything about the amazing movie, and it's getting harder by the day to maintain hope.

I'm really sad right now.

While I loathe "I'm busy, will post later" weblog posts, I feel this is necessary after looking at this site and realizing how neglected it appears.

In gearing up for this concert in NYC, I've been crazy mad busy with a million loose ends to tie up before that day, and recently I started playing with this new beta feature of del.icio.us to post my daily distributed bookmarks here. I sorta helped coax Joshua to code the feature, so that I could basically do what Jeff Veen does on his site, but without all the perl/MT frippery. What I didn't realize is that once I could post links interesting to me in a very low threshold way, it would totally satisfy whatever craving I had to post anything of substance to this site.

So yeah, expect the trickle of daily links for the next week or two as I descend back into the bitmines to crank stuff out. Oh, if you're in NYC next week, and you're attending the concert, be sure to look for me and say hi.

Don't leave me, you infuriating bastard! 03/14/2005 05:52 PM

So my colleague Matt Webb is about to abandon me in the BBC and is now trying to work out what to do next. Maybe you guys can help.

This feels like my most significant decision for the past decade, and the one that will most shape my life for the coming ten years. I've no idea what to do. Last time I tried to make a decision was last year, but then the book came along and I did that instead. Before then there was another offer too good to refuse. This time I really have to decide, the time is right, because even if I decide to keep to the status quo, this time that means I'm staying in industry, pretty much for good. And whatever happens now is significant because of my age, and because the subjects I'm interested in are coming to fruition both with people and technology, and because of all kinds of other externalities (funding bodies and so on)... But I can't work it out, and I need to make a decision, I think, in the next few weeks--not only which way to turn, but which college, what focus, which subjects.

If you're thinking of employing Matt, then obviously you could send him an e-mail offering him work and stuff. Or - and I think this is a much much better idea - you could send me an e-mail with details of the opportunity and I'll make sure he gets it... in the end... as soon as I've checked that it wouldn't be more appropriate for a person of slightly wider girth experience instead... er... or something... cough... nothing to see here...

Anyway, good luck old chap. You'll be much missed, impossible to replace and work will not be as much fun without you. Think of me fondly while you're out there in the real world, and send me a postcard occasionally.

Turn off the lights when you leave.

Turn off the lights when you leave. 07/24/2004 06:16 PM
The end of the light bulb? E. Fred Schubert, a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute "claims to have invented a 99-percent efficient reflector that promises to speed the replacement of light bulbs with LEDs." According to researchers, this could happen within the next five years. The current prototype is bankrolled by the ARPA and The National Science Foundation "recently award Schubert's team a $210,000 grant to create in three years a commercial version of his patented omnidirectional reflector."

"Schubert claimed that lighting accounts for 25 percent of U.S. electrical energy consumption. Since white LEDs emit more light per dollar and generate less unwanted heat, they are potentially a major energy saver."

I don't know how much I'll be posting here this month as I'll be glued to the Tour de France blog and TiVo'd race day episodes from OLN for the next three weeks.

It looks like the changes in the tour this year are going to make things tough for everyone involved, leveling the playing field and maybe even favoring the mountain climbers. I would love to see Lance win this year, I believe unless something drastic happens, even though he may not be the strongest physically, he's the strongest mentally and will push himself on top. At 32, it's likely this is Lance's last year or two that he'll even have a chance at winning, and I hope he does it.

I think Hamilton, Ullrich, and Mayo are going to give him a run for his money though.

Mary Mary, Quite Contrary

Mary Mary, Quite Contrary 11/04/2003 10:59 AM
ABC last night ran a program examining the life of Mary Magdalene and her role in Jesus' life as possible wife. The Mary -as-whore idea was debunked some time ago, but is it possible that she was made into a whore by the church to explain her intimacy with Jesus? The novel The da Vinci Code, on which this ABC program was based, explores the relationship between da Vinci and a secret society protecting the blood line of Christ, who according to some theories fathered children with his wife, Mary Magdalene. If you look at the Last Supper, the figure to the right of Jesus is so clearly a woman, and it is possible that the Holy Grail that gathered the blood of Christ is a metaphor for Magdalene's womb carrying Jesus' children. And according to Magdalene's apocryphal gnostic gospel, she knew secrets that Jesus kept from the apostles.
