Tough on Terror, or Tough on Liberty?

Tough on Terror, or Tough on Liberty? 12/12/2003 10:06 PM
Reports, including this one from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, on a study on the prevalence of terror-related crime hit the wire services several days ago but have received relatively little attention in broad circles. The new study, done by the TRAC research center at Syracuse University, shows that federal investigators have recommended the prosecution of an estimated 6,400 people on terrorism charges since September 11, 2001. Out of 6,400 cases, just 879 have been convicted. Of these, 184 have been convicted of "international terrorism" and the remainder for related charges. Overall, only 123 received significant sentences (over one year in prison) and only 23 were sentenced to five years or more. Also, convictions for "international terrorism" had a median duration of just 14 days, indicating that the vast majority of these convictions were for very minor crimes. The linked story quotes Charles Pena, director of a libertarian group. "It bothers me that we would round up whole bunches of people without an idea about whether they really are a terrorist . . . It certainly is valid to ask whether the whole war on terror is successful."

gridiron action!

Latest media stunt: hot girl-on-girl
gridiron action!
12/03/2003 02:38 PM
This Super Bowl halftime, make it to the Lingere Bowl. American TV hits a new low by inventing another sport along the lines of Foxy Boxing and Hot Oil Wrestling. The gridiron action features Team Dream vs. Team Euphoria (featuring washed-up former NFL players as coaches) in full contact football while wearing skimpy clothing. Even weirder, but there will be cheerleaders to cheerlead the players that are already dolled up to look like cheerleaders in some sort of subtle hot lesbian action. It's all pay-per-view, but this "Girls Gone Football" seems more like a new low than a step forward for real women's sports.

Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough

Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
05/20/2004 01:05 PM
After the bubble popped, many VCs practically stopped all investing. In the cases where they did invest, they often put in incre dibly onerous terms that gave the VCs a lot more power than they might have deserved (though, some VCs will disagree with this). Of course, now that times are getting better, people are saying that VCs are tightening terms again - so as not to get burned. What this really means is that many VCs are looking for any reason to make the terms more in their favor. Times are bad? Terms need to be tighter. Times are good? Terms need to be tighter to make sure they don't go bad again. The obvious response, of course, is that it is the VC's job to get good terms - but if those terms cause more problems, it's a strategic mistake. If entrepreneurs feel that their VCs are ripping them off, it defeats much of the purpose of getting that VC money in the first place. Besides, as the startup market picks up again (as it's doing) this becomes less of an issue. Already, we hear stories about VCs offering ridiculous valuations to companies because they're in a "hot" space. When competition for the hot startups increases, VCs are suddenly willing to make the terms a bit more reasonable.

Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet

Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet 04/22/2004 05:19 PM
Chrysalis previews their WiFi Seeker, a keychain sized device for instant Wi-Fi signal finding: Chrysalis sent me a demo unit of its just-unveiled WiFi Seeker, which they designed to differentiate 80211b/g networks from other devices. Two previous Wi-Fi signal finders fell short in ways the Seeker does not. The Kensington WiFi Finder is relatively large (credit card sized) and scans before displaying the results instant of a constant active scan--but it can tell Wi-Fi from junk. WFS-1 from SMart ID is much cooler offering a no-industrial-design-intended box with instant scanning--but which "hears" all 2.4 GHz signals the same. object classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" height="196" width="232" align="left" hspace="4"> Push the button on the WiFi Seeker and it scans briefly, often under a second, before displaying a signal strength in zero to four LEDs. Keep the button held down and it's a Wi-Fi dowser, allowing you to move around and see immediate response to different signal strengths. It's more directionally sensitive than the WFS-1. Chrysalis will sell the device starting in June for $29.95. Earlier, PC Tel has said they would make the device available to their customers, so one presumes that Chrysalis can sell custom branded versions of the device....

Traffic signal prankster

Traffic signal prankster 06/22/2005 01:49 AM
David Pescovitz: A prankster in Sunnyvale, California has been toying with traffic lights across the city for three months. Police say he or she has turned them to face the wrong way, altered the timing, and made them flash red in all directions. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
"There is evidence that whoever is doing it knows what they're doing," (city spokesman John) Pilger said. "The evidence suggests they're an electrician or have that background. This isn't a high school prank."

Further puzzling investigators is the fact the traffic trickster used a cherry-picker truck to reach an overhead signal spanning a busy intersection -- apparently without anyone being any the wiser, Pilger said. What's more, the practical joker has effortlessly opened the control boxes that contain the signals' electronic guts.
