How Not To Plea Bargain Your Way Out Of
An eBay Scam
04/05/2005 11:36 PMAssuming that you stole nearly half a million dollars from people
using the typical eBay scam methods (i.e., selling products you didn't
own and buying products but never paying for them), and then mocked
and insulted the victims of the scam when they accused you of scamming
them, the fact that you were even offered a plea bargain as a way out
seems way too nice. In fact, you would think that when more people
came out to accuse you of scamming them after the plea bargain was set
would make you shut up and take the punishment before things got
worse. Apparently, one such scammer didn't think that way. Not only
did he fight the idea that he should have to pay back the money he
stole, he then screwed up the plea bargain
by throwing a pitcher of water across the courtroom at
the prosecutor on the day he was supposed to be sentenced. No wonder
the judge said: "In my view, you are likely to perpetrate when you
come out of incarceration." The only thing surprising is that the
judge didn't put him behind bars for even longer.

04/04/2005 01:50 AMFormer Microsoft Corp. employee Richard Gregg was sentenced to two
years in prison yesterday for mail fraud after unlawfully selling more
than $13 million worth of his former employer's software.
U.S. District Judge John Coughenour also ordered Gregg, 45, to pay
more than $5 million in restitution to Microsoft for software he
diverted, keeping the profits after selling it.
In a plea agreement, Gregg admitted that, while working at Microsoft
as a project coordinator from May to December 2002, he took advantage
of a software-ordering program set up for internal use by Microsoft
employees.
He ordered and sold more than 4,400 pieces of software, with a value
of more than $13 million.

Buy A Post Office On eBay, Get No
Training, Run A Scam, Get Arrested
08/17/2004 03:50 AMNext time you think about buying a Post Office on eBay remember this
story. We hear stories all the time about weird things going up for
auction on eBay, mostly because eBay has become a new
PR
platform for selling weird or unusual items. A few years ago, a
woman in a small town in Texas put up the general store she owned for
sale on eBay. That store just happened to include a US Post Office.
A married couple bought the store and started to run the Post Office
themselves,
despite having no training at all -- something they felt
was a bit of a security threat. They claim they asked repeatedly for
the training, but no one would return their calls. Postal Service
accountants were calling and complaining about the way the couple
filled out forms, but since they couldn't get the proper training,
they just gave up filling out the forms altogether (or filled them out
on an irregular basis). Then, the money orders started showing up.
Boxes of 500, good for $1,000 each. The wife wanted to ship them
back, but the Postal Service said she couldn't. She eventually hid
about a million dollars worth of the money orders in her daughters
diaper bag, afraid of what would happen to them. Eventually, since no
one was paying attention to them, they decided to force the situation,
and had someone purchases $4,500 worth of the money orders with a
bogus check... which certainly got them noticed, and shut down the
store. The details of this story all seem a bit sketchy, and the only
account the NY Times comes up with is from the couple who bought the
store. The story seems to raise many more questions than it answers,
so it would be nice to hear the other side to get a better idea of
what really happened. In the meantime, though, you might want to
think twice about buying a Post Office on eBay.

eBay Art Scammer Sentenced To Four Years
In Prison
05/27/2004 12:11 PMNot only is eBay a
PR
platform if you want to sell unusual items, but it's also quite
the scam platform, for those trying to sell bogus items. Years ago,
we wrote about the hype surrounding a painting that was being sold on
eBay. As the price shot up,
rumors
began spreading that the painting was by Diebenkorn. Of course,
it quickly came out that it was all a big scam, and the guy behind it
had some friends register a bunch of fake names to bid up the price of
the painting and then spread rumors about its origin. Now, that
scammer has been
sentenced to four years in prison - which seems a bit extreme
for lying about a painting on eBay. Still, it also raises questions
about how people value art. Shouldn't people value art for the work
itself, and not who actually created it?

Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?
Scam Busters Just As Bad As Scam
Victims?
01/19/2004 05:05 AMAn odd article out of South Africa complaining that
scam
busters are just as bad as scam victims - in that they act in just
as predictable a manner. Of course, the scam busters aren't the folks
losing money to the scammers, and, in fact, they often are doing a
good job to spread news of a scam to protect potential victims. So,
I'm a bit confused as to what's so upsetting about people taking it
upon themselves to tell others about a scam. Certainly, there are
some things that don't deserve to be publicized, but are, due to the
intensity of the efforts against them. However, scams are something
that clearly should be publicized to limit the negative impact. It
seems that the real complaint of the writer isn't so much scam
busters, but "fad" busters who complain about people getting hooked on
the latest fad. However, fads and scams are two very different
things.
Scam Within A Scam Warning
Scam Within A Scam Warning
12/22/2003 07:43 PMThere have been a ton of warnings about so-called "phishing" spam
scams - where a very realistic email from a well-known financial firm
asks you to confirm the details of your account. Of course, the email
isn't real and the scammers just want your account details. They go
through all sorts of tricks to hide the fact that the email isn't
real, but the latest such phishing scam uses a bit of social
engineering. It
warns people about such scams, and then says they need
to fill out new information to avoid being taken by such a scam.
It seems the scammers are trying to get increasingly clever, and it's
an interesting social engineering trick to try to get people to let
down their guard by first warning them about a scam - and then
scamming them anyway.
