Big buffer goes around the world, big buffer underground, or at least that's the old-time religion Maxtor is spinning with their new SATA MaXLine III, a new series of 250GB and 300GB hard drives with a whopping 16MB buffer, as well as other SATA II features like native command queuing (trust me, it's good). But the buffer, that's the big money, since you'll see real world performance increases from a bigger buffer in a lot bigger way than even faster interconnects like SATA or ATA/133 can offer on their own. SimpleTech has announced their new Serial ATA Solid State Drive called the Zeus. Lacking any moving parts, it's effectively a gigantic flash drive with an SATA interface. The Zeus will be offered in capacities up to 128 gigabytes with read and write rates reaching 60 megabytes per second. (Being a solid state drive, though, it's true speed is in the seek time, which is negligible.) The drives are also only 9.5 millimeters tall, making them easily stackable and expandable. No word on price, but assume it will require a second mortgage, considering their 8GB CF card was selling for $6,000 last year.

Dedicated to sustaining the quality, integrity and dissemination of Serial ATA technology, 40 leading computer component and peripheral companies announced today the formation of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO).

The new organization builds on a long heritage of effective Serial ATA (SATA) organizations starting with SATA 1.0 in early 2000, to SATA II in 2002 and now SATA-IO. The working group's transition to SATA-IO, a formal industry association, indicates the member companies' long-term commitment to continue delivering technology and high-quality specifications that meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.

The current SATA-IO technology roadmap includes enabling the 3Gb/s technology defined in the newest SATA spec, which was released in July. The group also plans to expand membership to include additional optical storage vendors, storage controller and hard drive vendors, system builders, storage semiconductor designers and computer technology designers.
