Newbury Street community network possibly only commercial/community freenet: Leander Kahney of Wired News writes about Michael Oh's efforts to offer to free wireless networks across an increasing area of Boston's Newbury Street to promote his business while doing good. Oh seems to have a single backhaul, which radically reduces his cost in offering this kind of service.

And Here's What the Community Did

Well not only was I busy this weekend but others were too.  Here are some of the highlights:

The FurryGoat (I love that name) tells you how to add Feedster to Internet Explorer's search options using TweakUI.  [_Go_]

Feedster is increasingly being added as an option right next to the "Google It" links on blogs.  That's high praise.  Here are some examples:

  • FurryGoat
  • BunkoSquad (thanks Sooz!)
  • Vicky (a cool multi search engine interface)
  • (If you're adding Feedster to your blog like this, drop us a line and we'll link to you / add you to a list of "Blogs Supporting Feedster" that's coming out soon)

Ben Meadowcraft of the Mozilla Mycroft project is working on adding Feedster support to Mozilla's ability to drive Apple's Sherlock.  I'm not 100% sure on the status of this since I haven't personally tested it but if you want the .src and .png files for it drop me a line.  If Ben says its ok, I'll link to them as well.

The Amazing US contributed a really nice CSS design for our results that while we haven't had time to implement yet is coming.  Thanks!

I'm sure there's more going that I'm missing but this is a blog.  There's always more!

OpenXource community in a box 12/19/2004 03:30 PM

Bob McWhirter of Codehaus is back to blogging (blog/rss) again, but this time as a corporate blogger in support of a new venture called OpenXource(tm). Services include an interesting new blog called Crossings(tm) and Xircles(tm), which is described as a community-in-a-box (a nice comfy box which allows for plenty of thinking outside, I'm sure).

OpenXource will assist companies who want to release open source software, foster a community around their open source projects, and develop an open source strategy. Sounds like a great idea to me, so Good luck to Bob and Ben. Learn more at OpenXource : Where Opensource and Business Cross.

New PHP community site

New PHP community site 12/04/2003 09:33 PM

Via The Farm, Chris Shiflett is calling for assistance in setting up a new PHP community site to run along similar lines to use Perl. Chris has already secured an offer of hosting and support from O'Reilly and is now seeking offers of help from potential contributers. PHP has long needed a site of this kind (PHP Builder has lost a lot of momentum since being sold by Tim Perdue) so this could be a worth while project to get involved with if you have the time.

I wonder if Python would benefit from something like this? Python already has an excellent decentralised community centered mainly around the Python newsgroups, blogs and mailing lists, but it would be nice if Python.org provided more community oriented features.

JavaOne: where's the community? 06/07/2004 08:44 PM
In a few weeks, the main Java conference will kick off in San Francisco. JavaOne is the Java equivalent to Microsoft's PDC or TechEd. But where with those conferences, you see bloggers proudly declare that "they'll be there", with special icons and even special blog-sites, there seems to be very little of that going on in the Java camp. Aren't... (150 words)
