Intuit: How the Makers of Quicken Beat
Microsoft and Revolutionized an Entire
Industry
10/29/2003 12:10 AMIt's a modern-day David and Goliath story for the business world: a
company dreamed up at a kitchen table, built on explosive PC growth,
and forced to battle a giant in the race to revolutionize an industry.
This is the story of Intuit, creator of renowned software products
like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax-the company that beat mighty
Microsoft and changed the way 25 million people manage their finances.
Written by Intuit veteran Suzanne Taylor and seasoned business manager
Kathy Schroeder-who were granted exclusive interviews with founder
Scott Cook and other key figures- Inside Intuit tells this company's
original and fascinating tale for the first time. The book vividly
recounts each dramatic stage of Intuit's development: from initial
conception to "bet the company" investments; from strokes of marketing
genius to disastrous product launches; and from battles for survival
to successive victories against arch-rival Microsoft-the company no
one else could beat.

Inside Google News
Inside Google News
06/05/2005 11:34 PM
I just heard an excellent presentation by Krishna Bharat of Google News. He explained how
Google News works. It basically crawls news sites, finds "story
clusters", ranks the sources, figures out how prominently each source
is running the story, figures out whether its a big story or a little
story, figures out geographic references, and builds the pages for the
various geographic and language editions. He was talking to an
audience of editors so there were many questions about how the
"editing" process worked and many people couldn't seem to believe it
was algorithmic. Some people seemed afraid that Google News would
replace them. The point that he made and was clear from the process
that he explained is that it uses the decisions that the editors of
the various media make about what story to run and where in deciding
how important a story was. It was basically aggregating the decisions
of the editors, not replacing them. Without the editors and the "fr
ont page process" Google News couldn't decide what story to lead
with. At least in its current form.
The derivative conclusion you can come to is that Google News is
just amplifying or reinforcing systemic biases in MSM editorial and
NOT helping to address these issues. I think this make Google News
very news media friendly and also provides an opportunity for bloggers
and projects like Global Voices to
still have a very important role. I guess that if Google New started
incorporating more of the alternative press, they could shift the
bias.
During the discussion, Dan Gillmor pressed Krishna for more
transparency on the algorithm and the list of sources and I seconded
the motion.
Some good notes of the
sessions on the editors blog.

Feature
The Legality Of Amazon's Search The Book
Feature
11/11/2003 10:32 AMWho better to discuss the legality of Amazon's new full text search
feature, than a copyright lawyer who is also an author? Over at
News.com, Doug Isenberg points out that if you happen to do a search
on the system of "fair use" and "internet", you'll actually get the
passage from his book describing how one of the determinants of
whether or not something is fair use is
how
it impacts the sales of the book. So, while he's was a bit
surprised, as an author, to find out his entire book was online via
Amazon, it's probably perfectly legal. In fact, he says that the
publishers probably do have the right to make that call (no matter
what the Authors Guild
says), though he admits that almost no one probably thought about this
potential use of their work when they signed their publishing deal.
Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far
Amazon Book Search Boosting Sales So Far
10/31/2003 01:39 AMAmazon today was excited to announce that in the first week of their
full-text book searching service, books in the service
sold
9% better than those not in the search. While I do think the
service is great, and I'm sure it will boost sales, I'm not sure these
numbers mean anything. There was definitely a big boost in usage of
this service due to the
ton of publicity it received. So,
let's see how it's doing a few months down the road, and then it might
be worth talking about. In the meantime, various authors are
sti
ll complaining about the service. They quote an author of a
travel book who is worried that readers only want a couple of sections
and would print those out and never buy the book. I guess he hasn't
been ot the library lately. If people just need a couple pages out of
his book, they're not going to buy the book anyway.

Google Book
06/16/2002 11:50 AMvia Rael Dornfest we learn that Tara Calishan is writing a book on
Google: As most of you know, I write stuff. And soon I'll be helping
put together a book on search engines. Now that the Google API has
been released, books on search engines are much more than "use this
search technique" (though those are important too.) Now people can put
programs together that do Cool Search Things. If you know of a cool
Google technique -- an interesting use of the API, a search trick you
think is nifty -- send it in. (I already know about Googlewhacks,
Googlematic, Google Smackdown, and Google results by e-mail!) ALSO, if
you have a GOOGLE WISH -- the thought, "Wow, I wish I could do X with
Google," send that in too. I might be able to help make your Google
Wish come true!Aww, I wanted to write that book. Anyway, keep sending
in your cool Google tools, techniques and wishes. Thanks!
