Open Source Inspectors
Open Source Inspectors

Open source is not inherently more secure than closed source.
If you have doubts
about the preceding statement, Dare Obasanjo's The
Myth of Open Source Security series of articles is a good place
to start.
Two main problems I see from my perspective with open source
security are that a)
there are no compelling incentives for open source developers to
examine the code,
and b) they have to examine everything. Even if all
the developers
are coerced into doing so, not everyone will do a good job and
everyone is not
the same as everything.
On the other hand, blackhats have compelling incentives to look at
the code and they
only need to look at a fraction of the code developers have to look
at since they
only need to find one vulnerability to hit paydirt.
While I agree with Dare on most points, I think his suggested
solution of adopting
software quality enhancing techniques and practices is
unimplementable for most
open source projects. As software developers and managers, we
tend to focus
too much on how we doing things and what we use to get things
done, meaning skills,
techniques, and tools we use every day. The open source
movement is not about
those things. It's not about how or what
but who, people doing
things together.
Quality of open source software cannot be improved by asking people
to wear straight
jackets and drawing lines on the floor telling people where to go
next. Instead,
we need to see the entire open source community as a
global ecology and find
subtle ways to change the antfarm environment so
that the ants people
will naturally respond in the direction that improves the quality
of goods they produce.
One such solution is the introduction of open source inspectors
backed by
inspector rating and reward systems. An open source inspector
is a software
engineer whose responsibility is to inspect the quality of
software. Unlike
developers who tend to stay with a small stable of projects for
extended periods of
time, inspectors are gypsies who move from projects to projects.
Each inspector examines code for quality and security. Result
of an inspection
is a report and a rating assertion signed by the inspector.
Rating assertions
by an inspector ultimately affects the proficiency rating of the
inspector.
Each bug or vulnerability discovered in the code they inspected
lowers their proficiency
rating.
Achieving and maintaining high proficiency rating is the
lure reward
motivating inspectors to dedicate a substantial portion of their
time to inspect open
source projects of their choosing pro bono. If they are any
good, they will
find plenty of paying customers.
In summary, I am advocating the use of social engineering over
software engineering
to enhance open source security. Designing, developing,
debugging, and deploying
social forces is the ultimate engineering profession
IMHO. The only problem
with such a profession is that lifecycles of such 'wares' literally
means lifecycles.

Airport luggage inspectors policing
thoughtcrime
03/15/2003 11:03 AM
A traveller flying to San Diego from Seattle found his luggage had
been opened by the Federal Transport Security Authority, who had left
behind a note telling him so, on which was scrawled "DONT APPRECIATE
YOUR ANTI-AMERICAN ATTITUDE" -- a reference to the "No Iraq War" signs
he'd picked up in a shop in Seattle.
So, the Feds are not only inspecting our bags -- and invading our
privacy -- to ensure that they are bomb-free; they're now taking it
upon themselves to chastise us for our political beliefs? What the
hell does keeping bombs off airplanes have to do with winkling out
protest signs?
Nothing like a little thoughtcrime policing to undermine the entire
mission and credibility of the TSA. Of course, the TSA is maintaining
that this wasn't the work of an inspector -- rather, someone at the
airport cut the security-seal left behind by the inspector, defaced
the "You have been inspected" card, and replaced the seal, all without
being caught by the TSA itself (wow, that gives me a lot of confidence
in the TSA's ability to secure the nation's airports!).
Nico Melendez, western regional spokesman for the TSA, said the note
in Goldberg's luggage will be investigated, but he said there's no
proof that a TSA employee wrote it. "It's a leap to say it was a TSA
screener," Melendez said.
But Goldberg said, "It seems a little far-fetched to think people are
running around the airport writing messages on TSA literature and
slipping them into people's bags."

02/01/2005 09:33 PM I had two gripes about the mini mac as the Projector Computer
(obviously that wasn't enough to not order it). 1) Lack of gigabit
ethernet. With a small laptop drive inside it'd be nice to have as
much bandwidth out as possible. Someone suggested that maybe I could
get a couple hundred megabits out of the firewire with some sort of
ethernet to firewire adapter. I haven't found that, but I remembered
that there's "IP over Firewire" in OS...

So
finding out you have a dead fan on your videocard is sort of
bittersweet. It sucks because it kills your machine, but hey! New
video card, right? (Actually, I just got a replacement fan, but I now
have a reason to eye those upcoming Nvidia 6600 GTs.)
But I was over at Newegg buying the fan, which caused me to go
check Slickdeals (don't ask, it's just a habit), and I noticed that
Dell Home has a deal right now where you can pick up the Axim X30
624MHz version for just $267 shipped. It starts at $349, drops to 15%
off automatically, and there is a $30 off $300 coupon
(LV2S68M28T3PB1). It only has a half-VGA screen (320 x 240), but it
has built-in Bluetooth and WiFi, and of course that fast processor. I
don't even want a new Pocket PC and I'm toying with the idea of
getting one.

VisionTek Xtasy ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) video card on sale for
just $150 with $5 shipping (New York state crew pays tax). The 9800
Pro isn't the most cutting edge video card out there today, but I can
personally vouch for its continued ability to play all the newest
games. It's still able to pump polygons in Doom 3, Tribes: Vengeance,
and Rome: Total War just fine. Better than fine, actually, and I paid
$300 for mine just six sad months ago.
Oh, and despite the dorky name, VisionTek is a fairly well-known
brand, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Another chance to have Cory's books

06/01/2004 02:09 PMBack when I lived in San Francisco, the nice people at
Borderlands Books did this
super-cool thing where they'd take orders for my books, along with
details for personal inscriptions, then get me to sign them when I
dropped round the store, and ship them for free within the US (and for
a modest fee elsewhere).
Of course, that became a lot less practical last winter, when I moved
to London. But you've got another chance to get a signed, inscribed
book shipped right to your door: I'm swinging briefly through SF in
June (and I do mean *briefly* -- sorry, no time to socialize) and I'm
gonna stop by Borderlands and sign any stock that they have. If you
get your order in before June 15, I'll sign your copy that week and
you'll have it before July 1 -- pretty cool!
Borderlands' contact info is
866 Valencia St.
San Francisco CA 94110 USA
415 824-8203
888 893-4008
Call or email them with your order and payment details and they'll get
you sorted out.
