Two to Beam Up
Two to Beam Up
06/17/2004 04:10 PMRemember a few months back when photons were successfully
teleported? Well, they've done it with atoms now.
In quantum teleportation, the sender, normally called
Alice, instantaneously transfers information about the quantum state
of a particle to a receiver called Bob. The uncertainty principle
means that Alice cannot know the exact state of her particle. However,
another feature of quantum mechanics called "entanglement" means that
she can teleport the state to Bob.
I'm not real sure what all that means, but I'm sure that soon they'll
be able to do this with multiple atoms at the same time. I think we've
all seen "The Fly" enough times to understand how many ways this
technology can go wrong. If they're going to start building Star Trek
contraptions, let's start with a holodeck. Wouldn't you rather your
garage looked like the moon than risk a trip to the moon in a
teleporter.

Beam of Pain
Beam of Pain
06/07/2004 10:56 AMA roundup of new weapon technologies in this
Sacramento Bee
piece:
Test subjects can't see the invisible beam from the Pentagon's new,
Star Trek-like weapon, but no one has withstood the pain it produces
for more than three seconds. People who volunteered to stand in front
of the directed energy beam say they felt as if they were on fire.
When they stepped aside, the pain disappeared instantly.
The long-range column of millimeter-wave energy is known as the
"Active Denial System" for its ability to prevent an aggressor from
advancing. Senior military officials, who plan to deliver the device
for troop evaluation this fall, say years of testing has produced no
sign it will lead to health effects beyond perhaps causing skin to
temporarily redden.(...)
But in an era of secret interrogations of al-Qaida suspects and
revelations of U.S. abuse of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison,
Executive Director Doug Johnson of the Minneapolis-based Center for
Torture Victims is skeptical. "It seems fundamentally a weapon that's
designed to create a great deal of pain and fear," Johnson said. "The
concern I would have is ... once this kind of technology is available
and there's a perception that it's safe and nonlethal, it seems like a
natural device to be used in interrogations.

Beam me up, mini
Beam me up, mini
09/25/2004 11:37 AMAbout three weeks after I first moved into my Rhode Island apartment,
I found myself struggling through my first blackout. With most of my
belongings still in boxes, I was forced to navigate my
still-unfamiliar surroundings with the only light I could find —
the backlight on my iPod.
That being said Griffin Technology, creators of some of the coolest
accessories ever to grace an Apple product — or desktop —
have announced a whole new iPod accessory, one that adds nothing to
the musical value of the iPod, or its aesthetic appeal, or its
recording capabilities.
Quite simply, this new iPod add-on turns the iPod or iPod mini into a
flashlight (or a laser pointer).
Called i
Beam, the snap-on flashlight “is great for finding keys in
the dark. The other half of the package is a class IIIA laser
pointer, handy for iPod-friendly presentations and other, less
professional pursuits. Both units come with a snap-on protective cap
that can be attached to any keychain for convenient portability and
accessibility.”
Which, of course, lends itself to the age-old question: What will they
think of next?

may be some help on the horizon, now that Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.
says it will add video transmissions to its U.S. pay-radio system in

In another splash of technology convergence that is seeing the
boundaries melt between all forms of electronic communications, Sirius
said yesterday that in the second half of 2006 it will add two or
three channels of video content to the lineup of about 120 channels of
digital music, talk and information that it already beams by satellite
to more than one million subscribers in the United States.

Tiny Projectors: Hologram and Lasers,
Not Smoke and Mirrors
Tiny Projectors: Hologram and Lasers,
Not Smoke and Mirrors
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
Researchers from Cambridge and Light Blue Optics,
Ltd. have developed a prototype pocket-sized, battery-powered video
projector -- or at least the technology that should, in the mythical
two to five years, lead to one. The trick is a total lack of lenses or
light bulbs, but instead to display a two-dimensional hologram on a
microdisplay then shine a laser through it, which scatters the light
into a larger, projected picture. Projectors are great -- I'm about to
pick up a cheap one, myself. If they could slip these into cellphones
or PDAs, there would be no need for roll-up screens or dorky
mirrorshade HUDs at all. All you'd need is a clean wall and a total
blotting out of the star we call our sun.

The nanotechnology research field is pretty fertile these days.
Researchers at Harvard recently showed a nanowire which could be the next big diagnostic tool for
doctors. Meanwhile, University of Southern California scientists
have developed a 'nanosensor' that only works when noise is added. And another
Harvard team has developed nanoscale fibers that are thinner than the wavelengths of light they
carry which may have applications in ever-shrinking medical
products and tiny photonics equipment such as nanoscale laser systems,
tools for communications and sensors. This news
roundup contains more details and references about these projects.
You'll also find a stunning picture of a s ilica nanowire wrapping a

04/07/2005 05:57 PMIf you think video games are engrossing now, just wait: PlayStation
maker Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory
information directly into the brain.
The technique could one day be used to create video games in which you
can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf.
The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a
technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain
to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and
images.
