Psy-ops to calm traffic
08/02/2004 11:49 AMThe UK's Transport Research Laboratory is exploring ways to create the
illusion of danger on roads in an effort to slow speeders. According
to lead researcher Janet Kennedy, simple things such as removing
central white lines have already proven successful in psyching out
drivers:
"Perceptual techniques which make the environment seem more complex or
less safe have the potential for success. Natural traffic calming,
such as narrow or winding roads, can be very effective as well as
being more acceptable to drivers. Carefully-designed schemes, using
the properties of natural traffic calming, have the potential to
achieve a similar effect."

questions out of the box. To answer those questions, you typically
need to extend an existing tool, write your own tool, or spend some
quality time with awk, grep, and wc.Or, you can turn to LAMP. By
combining Linux, Apache (and mod_log_sql), MySQL, and PHP, you can
build a customized logging and reporting system without a lot of

Traffic-Based Feedback on the Web
Traffic-Based Feedback on the Web
08/15/2004 06:13 AMTraffic-Based Feedback on the Web by Jonathan Aizen, Daniel
Huttenlocher, Jon Kleinberg, and Antal Novakhttp://ww
w.pnas.org/cgi/content/abstract/0307539100v1Abstract:Usage data at a high-traffic web
site can expose information about external events and surges in
popularity that may not be accessible solely from analyses of content
and link structure. We consider sites that are organized around a set
of items available for purchase or download, consider, for example, an
e-commerce site or collection of online research papers, and we study
a simple indicator of collective user interest in an item, the batting
average, defined as the fraction of visits to an item’s description
that result in an acquisition of that item. We develop a stochastic
model for identifying points in time at which an item’s batting
average experiences significant change. In experiments with usage data
from the Internet Archive, we find that such changes often occur in an
abrupt, discrete fashion, and that these changes can be closely
aligned with events such as the highlighting of an item on the site or
the appearance of a link from an active external referrer. In this
way, analyzing the dynamics of item popularity at an active web site
can help characterize the impact of a range of events taking place
both on and off the site. This has been added to the articles section

Registering Your Car During A Traffic
Stop
12/05/2003 11:19 AMTalk about real-time computing. A New Jersey man who was pulled over
by police for not having his registration up-to-date did some quick
thinking to keep his car from getting towed. He told the officer that
he just hadn't gotten around to renewing the registration form, and
was told that that's no excuse - especially since it's so easy to
register online. The officer then returned to his patrol car to write
a ticket and call for a tow truck - since it's illegal to have an
unregistered car on the road. The driver found the registration form,
which was in his car, called a friend on his mobile phone and had the
friend
register for him
online while the cop was writing the ticket. When the ticket was
written, the guy told the surprised officer that the car was now
registered, which was quickly confirmed. The ticket was still issued,
but the tow truck was canceled. Of course, if the guy had a smart
phone he probably could have done the whole thing himself - but it
still is impressive. Sometimes, always being connected can be useful.

httpflow: how to view raw traffic
httpflow: how to view raw traffic
03/17/2005 03:31 AMSince both MarsEdit and NetNewsWire make HTTP requests, I often have a
need to see what the raw HTTP traffic looks like.
There are different ways to do this, but what I do is type
httpflow on the command line, then type my password, and
then watch the traffic.
httpflow on my machine is an alias—a command-line
command alias, not a traditional Mac OS file alias—for the
following command:
sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -c port
80
You’ll need tcpflow to make it work. Tcpflow isn’t a
standard part of OS X—but you can get a copy from
Marc
Liyanage. (That’s the version I myself use.)
Sometimes I only need just a quick peek at the headers (for a feed,
usually) to see if it’s redirecting or returning a 404-not-found
or something. In that case I don’t need
tcpflow—
curl does the job. I type something like
curl -I
'http://maccentral.macworld.com/mnn.cgi' to see what
I get. (Curl comes with OS X, I believe.)
