Adoption Day 06/14/2004 09:07 PM

A heartfelt congratulations to Eric and Kat Meyer on their adoption of Carolyn. It's obvious from Eric's post that all three members of the Meyer family are lucky to have each other.

Thunderbird Adoption Lagging

Thunderbird Adoption Lagging 04/08/2005 12:50 PM

Thunderbird Finds It Hard To Mimic Firefox's Rapid Rise, Says Report: A report has been released which indicates that Thunderbird is not flourishing the way Firefox is.

Thunderbird's major shortcoming is the absence of an integrated calendar, the report says. A future release is expected to fill that void. Once calendaring becomes available, Thunderbird will be much more competitive, the report suggests.

Even so, the study notes that Outlook's position is strengthened by third-party developers. With hundreds of plug-ins available, Outlook users may be reluctant to switch until Thunderbird offers a greater range of expansion options.

I say give it time. Lightning will help.

Using Pine to Track Unix Adoption 05/11/2004 01:56 AM
I happened to be reading the change notes for the latest release of Pine (which I used for about 5 years during and after college), when I noticed that they're also tracking the adoption rate of Pine. In doing so they've created some interesting charts related to Pine's growth (bottom of the page). The most interesting to me are those that plot the popularity of Pine on various Unix and Unix-like operating systems over time. For my mind, that's a...

Embryo Adoption Study Flawed

Embryo Adoption Study Flawed 07/06/2004 03:32 AM
"Mom, why did you give me up?" is the usual question an adoptee asks when meeting her natural mother. But with embryo adoption, the question will be "Mom and dad, why did you donate me?" A woman who gives birth to a baby adopted as an embryo from another couple then implanted and gestated in her own womb may feel like the child is her real offspring. Will a couple who adopts in this way be prepared for the realities of adoption? Will the embryo benefit from being unfrozen and "saved" by adoption? [PRWEB Jul 6, 2004]

The Politics of the Adoption of Open
Source
06/17/2005 05:02 PM

An interesting wiki has been set up by the Social Science Research Council, inviting collaboration on a real-time history and analysis of the politics of open source adoption (POSA). By 'politics of adoption' the SSRC seeks to step back from the task of explaining or justifying Free and/or Open Source Software (F/OSS) in order to ask how increasingly canonical explanations and justifications are mobilized in different political contexts.

Initial contributions to POSA 1.0 have already been made on topics as diverse as 'The European Politics of F/OSS Adoption', 'F/OSS Adoption in Brazil', 'F/OSS Adoption in the Health Care Sector' as well as 'Legal Uncertainty in Free and Open Source Software and the Political Response.'

To sweeten the pot, two prizes of $250 will be awarded to the two best contributions to POSA 2.0

And, of course, the wiki is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.

Rate of U.S. Broadband Adoption
Increasing, Says FCC

Rate of U.S. Broadband Adoption
Increasing, Says FCC
09/10/2004 01:13 PM

In a report just issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the number of U.S. broadband users has nearly tripled between June 2001 and December 2003. As of the survey, 28 million lines of high-speed access to the Internet, defined as at least 200 Kbps bandwidth in at least one direction, are in use in the United States.

Cable and Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) serve provide the majority of broadband service: cable, 75 percent; ADSL, 15 percent. In 2001, at the time of the previous FCC report, the relative percentages were: cable, 56 percent; ADSL, 17 percent.

As of December 2003, only 7 percent of U.S. ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) Codes, had no high-speed service, down from 22 percent in 2001. Also, 46 percent of U.S. ZIP have four or more providers of high-speed service.

Dave's Opinion
I'm a fan of cable broadband service, and it seems that many online Americans share my opinion. I detest dial-up service, it makes teaching class a drudgery, and it's too slow for me to listen to my favorite radio stations. I can easily do without cable TV; however, I can't do without our cable modem. Now, the big question is, are we ready for VOIP (Voice Over IP).

Is It Important To Lead In Broadband
Adoption?

Is It Important To Lead In Broadband
Adoption?
01/19/2004 05:05 AM
USA Today is freaking out because they suddenly noticed that there are some other countries that have more broadband penetration than the US does. Of course, in most cases, these are much smaller nations where it's much easier and cost efficient to roll out broadband. The article suggests that we need more government incentives to roll out broadband, and ignores the argument that, perhaps, the market will do okay on its own. The real question is whether or not being the first to roll out widespread broadband is all that important. These arguments come up all the time. Should the government support certain industries that they believe are core to their economic survival? The US has historically gone with an open market approach - and that's worked out quite well. They don't make big bets on things that it turns out the market doesn't want. Yes, things sometimes take more time, and there are companies that fail spectacularly in the meantime - but the end results are much stronger. So, I don't think there's any reason to get too worried about US broadband rollouts just yet.

Format Offering Applications, Finally: I'd heard of Friend-of-a-Friend (FOAF) before, but there was no penetration, so I didn't pay it much attention. But now that TypePad includes FOAF by default, well, now you have penetration.

And now that thousands of these FOAF files have been built by TypePad, along with many more built manually by users of Movable Type and other tools, we're starting to see some of the first applications emerge around the nascent standard.
