10/30/2003 12:37 AMArriving even earlier than we had originally predicted, the first DVD
recorder that will support the playback and recording of Windows Media
9 video files is here. Using Windows Media 9 means that over six hours
of DVD quality video can be squeezed onto one disc, and the DiVA 489,
which is being built by Malata/Wanlida (yeah, we'd never heard of them
either) but will be sold under the Polaroid brand name in the US, can
also play Windows Media content that's streamed or downloaded over the
Internet. Read...

Is The Recording Industry Hiding spyware
In Windows Media Files?
Is The Recording Industry Hiding spyware
In Windows Media Files?
12/30/2004 02:25 PMHere's a story that raises many more questions than it answers. When
the recording industry first tried to get politicians to shut down
file sharing networks, they went with the "it's stealing music" line,
which generated some interest, but most people didn't seem to pay
attention. Then, the industry suddenly became oh-so-concerned about
the fact that
child
porn was on these systems, and tried to convince politicians they
needed to stop file sharing for the "sake of the children." Lately,
it seems the industry will do whatever it takes to make file sharing
systems look bad. With that in mind, it makes you wonder if they'd go
so far as to specifically hide spyware on file sharing networks just
to upset users. It's not entirely clear if that's what happened, but
it seems like the most obvious explanation for the following story,
which was found on
Broadband
Reports. Overpeer, a subsidiary of Loudeye, has been caught
hiding
adware and spyware within Windows Media files. Overpeer is
the same company that the recording industry has hired in the past to
dump fake versions of songs on file sharing networks. What the
article doesn't answer is whether or not the industry hired Overpeer
to dump spyware on the network as well, but it's likely they're
pleased either way. Overpeer defends their actions by saying that
anyone obviously deserves what they get because, obviously, they were
looking for unauthorized files. It's not clear that everyone would
agree. Sneaking malicious files onto someone's computer because "they
deserved it!" doesn't seem like a very good justification. What may
be even more important to this story, however, is the revelation of
just how easy it is, thanks to a
huge loophole in Microsoft's
copy protection technology, to include a malicious file with an audio
or video file. Basically, because Windows DRM needs to look for a
license, all anyone needs to do is point that license to a website
that loads malicious content and off you go. Thank you Microsoft, for
creating a huge loophole that will probably make sure millions of new
computers are loaded with spamming, DDOSing trojans shortly. Thank
goodness for that
Microsoft DRM, huh? Not only does it not protect any actual
property while making things more expensive, it opens up plenty more
people to malicious attacks.

Video 9
12/22/2004 01:48 AMIt took a relatively small California company called Telestream to
bridge the video creation incompatibilities of two PC giants. Apple's
Macintosh computers maintain a stronghold in video editing, thanks to
their art department-friendliness, a long legacy of use in Avid and
competitors' video equipment and Apple's own professional software,
Final Cut Pro. While Apple has carved out a video production niche,
Microsoft has been trying to control video distribution through its
Windows Media Video 9, which is currently popular for Web video, but
also has the potential to be used for portable entertainment, DVDs,
and even cable-TV distribution. Microsoft recently donated WMV9's
codec, called VC-1, to the Society of Motion Picture and Television
Engineers (SMPTE), hoping to also make it a TV industry standard.

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

Like many 6th through 8th
graders, the Matco PDV-040 is hefty and awkward, but has a lot to
offer if you'd just give it a chance. The portable pocket digital
video recorder encoders to MPEG-4 and MP3 to its internal 20 or 40GB
hard drive and can play back videos on either its 408 x 234 3.5-inch
screen or its NTSC/PAL output (likely composite). Its capturing is
limited to 25-28 fps at 320 x 240, though, so it's not exactly going
out for the Mathletes, either, if you get my meaning. And like a 6th
through 8th grader, I have decided to unexpectedly turn a cold
shoulder to the PDV-040 after discovering its retail price of $749,
alienating it instead to hang out with the much cooler kids from
iRiver and Creative (they're skinny and wear black).

For those with more
far-ranging video needs, Sharp is releasing the DV-HRW30, a hard disk
video recorder which also has a DVD burner and VHS deck. It even
bundles in a satellite decoder, although it can only tape that direct
to hard drive or DVD -- probably not a big problem, especially since
you can freely move video around from format to format without
restriction (according to Sharp, at least). The hard drive is only
80GB, which is sort of puny these days, but could probably be upgraded
without too much worry. The DV-HRW30 is set to hit Nipponese stores
July 1st for around ¥95,000.
