Actually Cheap 256MB USB Drive/MP3
Player
09/10/2004 07:04 AM

Here's something we're not used to see coming out of Japan: low-cost products. Evergeen has announced the "EG-MP3" series of USB memory type MP3 players. And cheap for Japan means about $60 USD for a 256MB model, which isn't half bad in America, even. Looking at the low cost, and seeing as how this can double as a USB memory drive, I'm thinking they're trying to appeal to the "2nd mp3 player" market. You know, the kind of people who think "well, I'm looking for a USB memory thingy, and it's only another $10 for one that plays MP3s." Yeah, those people.

Judging by the name of the online vendor (Shanghai Donya), though, I get the feeling this isn't a Made in Japan product.

Napster Giving Away Rio Chiba, Nitrus
with One Year Subscription
06/17/2004 10:06 AM

free_rio_napster.jpg image

Whoa ho! Looks like the new Napster is trying a new tip, offering a free Rio Chiba Sport flash player to anyone who coughs up the $120 for a one-year subscription to the music download service. And if the 128MB Chiba isn't enough to entice you (although it can be upgraded via SD/MMC), you can pick up a Rio Nitrus, with a 1.5GB hard drive inside (not the 4GB version, I'm saying) for only $80 more (around $200). Not a great deal, if all you're interested in is the player, but if Napster has piqued your interest, it's not a bad way to go.

It's funny, though, to see Napster give away players to promote their service, when Steve Jobs maintains they keep iTunes Music Store around to sell iPods.

256MB version of 6600 to come 09/11/2004 03:58 AM
IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE to build a card that will have 500/1000MHz clock and still have more than 128MB memory and sell it for less than $200. At least this is how Nvidia feels. A 128 Mbit memory clocked to 1000MHz still costs too much. As for a 6600 standard card clocked at 300MHz core and only 500 MHz memory it won't be any problem to make a 256MB card and sell it to all that worship at the altar of massive amounts of memory.

06/17/2004 10:06 AM

thanko_mp3_watch.jpg imageWhile running a cord from my wrist sounds like a good way to constantly rip my headphones out of my ears, I have to admit a certain admiration for these new MP3 SuperDisk Watches from Thanko. Not because they're good looking -- they're not -- but because despite cramming up to 256MB of flash memory and MP3 decoding hardware inside, they've still managed to make a watch that looks, for all intents and purposes, normal. It does use a separate cord which would have to be carried around if you want to add or remove data, which could be a hassle, but the watch face is even analog, and waterproof besides. Pick one up at your local Japanese gray market electronics store for only around $150.

03/14/2005 06:10 PM
ATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media products, today announced that it is in mass production of high capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV) feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices. The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption, meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrow’s mobile digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available immediately, with 512MB available in March. [PRWEB Feb 20, 2005]

JNC SSF-M5: Yet Another 1.5GB MP3 Player 06/29/2004 08:49 AM

jnc_m5.jpg imageToday, I make an iron-clad prediction: by this time next year, you'll be able to get 1.5GB MP3 players at Wal-Mart (or your local indigenous people exploiter of choice) for $50, or free when you sign up for a new Sears card. I mean, these things are just crawling out of the woodwork, like this JNC SSF-M5, which as DAPreview notes, has a sharp resemblance to the recently announced Teac MP-1000. Don't get me wrong, though; I think cheap, disposable 1.5GB players are fantastic. That's about as small as I'd want to go in a player, since I tend to sort of eyeball these by 'album quantity,' and 15-25 is an ample number.

When is Fisher-Price going to get in the game? Disney Electronics, do you still hate me? Because if not, I'd like to see a sub-$100 model pre-loaded with a bunch of your movie soundtracks.

You know how sometimes you think up a gadget but you figure that no one will ever build it? Well, the Omnifi is one of those gadgets, except that it's real. The Omnifi is a digital media player for your car with a 20GB hard drive and an 802.11b WiFi attachment which actually makes it possible (assuming your car is within range) to wirelessly beam your music directly to your car from your PC. You can also set it to automatically transmit all sorts of information to your car, like the weather, news, etc. The hard drive can also detach and be connected to a PC (sorta like the Phatnoise system) if your car is parked too far away for WiFi. The MP-820BT has integrated Bluetooth which can, when paired with your mobile phone, route incoming calls over your headphones and use the built-in microphone to talk about without ever pulling the phone out of your pocket. It only has 256MB of RAM built-in, but it does have an integrated FM tuner, so for the more mobile among us it could be a slick way to go hands-free.

Sporting audio interfaces you probably haven't heard of, such as the "High Quality Digital Audio Transmission System," the player can output using optical, coaxial, balanced digital, and even i.Link (Sony's FireWire flavor) ports. The latter should help you with those 200Mbps Super Audio CD DSD (Direct Stream Digital) transfers.

Sounds expensive. Oh, that's right, it is expensive. Let's hope you get what you pay for.
