Porn Problem On Mobile Phones Solved

Porn Problem On Mobile Phones Solved

Porn Problem On Mobile Phones Solved 06/14/2004 01:17 PM

For the last few months, the idea that kids would be running around accessing all sort of awful pornography on their mobile phones has been getting increasing attention, mainly due to mislead ing studies and a growing frenzy of people who hear the words "porn" and "children" and like to freak out before any details are known. However, it seems that worried parents around the globe can now rest easier, since we're being told the problem of porn on mobile phones has been solved by some new filters. Yes, despite the fact that porn filters on much more powerful computers have been shown to barely work at all, while tending to block plenty of perfectly legitimate sites and images, apparently these porn filters on mobile phones work perfectly. Or, at least, that's the impression you would get reading this article that doesn't seem to doubt the fact that these mobile phone porn filters must work. At the same time, no one has yet demonstrated that the issue of porn on mobile phones actually is a problem - but the article does make clear that wireless carriers are going to need to manage all this filtering software themselves, because it won't run at the handset level. So, we now have an expensive to maintain non-working solution to a problem that might not exist.

Sweet! After trying a couple registry hacks that didn't quite work, this program did what I wanted. It opens a new window with just the new message window populated (without the rest of the gmail "chrome") but I'm sure Google will create some sort of toolbar extension that does the same.

Contribute / ProFTPd problem solved

Contribute / ProFTPd problem solved 11/19/2003 06:55 PM

After further analysis of the Contribute problem described earlier, we discovered that Contribute was opening a new FTP connection every time we clicked a link within the application even before we had hit the "edit page" button to fire up the editing mode. Switching the connection over to use SFTP instead of FTP had the same problem, with a secure connection being opened for each link we clicked instead. The connections remained open until we shut down Contribute.

My hunch is that this could be an obscure bug that only surfaces when Contribute is used with ProFTPd 1.2.9. At any rate, we've solved the problem by setting the MaxClientsPerUser directive in the ProFTPd configuration file. Contribute doesn't seem to mind in the slightest.

P2P Porn Is Not The Problem

P2P Porn Is Not The Problem 12/12/2003 12:51 PM
A few months back, when Senator Orrin Hatch was convinced by some wealthy backers that the real problem with P2P file sharing systems was that porn was available, we wondered how that was any different from the internet. There's lots of porn on the internet, but politicians aren't running around saying that we need to shut it down. But, because of some misleading statements by the entertainment industry, politicians are freaking out about the file sharing networks. If they do try to do something to shut them down, of course, the porn will just move elsewhere where it will be harder to shut it down. In fact, the porn already is elsewhere - as it has been all along. The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) is telling Senator Hatch that P2P porn is no worse than what's already available on the web. Hatch's original statement was based on a GAO report, but they're now saying that wasn't based on a comprehensive study, but tips that were sent in to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Only about 1.4% of those tips concerned P2P networks.

Can I See Your Mobile Porn License?

Can I See Your Mobile Porn License? 07/02/2004 02:57 PM
Many mobile phone operators have been banking on porn to jump start their data services revenue. This has always seemed like an odd strategy. Perhaps I don't understand the porn market very well, but are people really that hard up for porn that they want to be able to view it on a tiny screen on the go? Either way, it looks like a roadblock may now be in the way. With the fear that (gasp! oh no!) kids might actually view porn on a mobile phone (as if they can't already access it on the internet), mobile phone operators in the UK are quickly trying to block out the porn (which, for some reason, they think is actually possible). Vodafone's latest strategy is to block all porn u nless you somehow prove yourself to be an adult by giving them a credit card (which I'm sure plenty of kids have access to) or showing up in person at a store. I'm sure that will be a popular option: "Hi, I'm here to get porn on my phone!" Looks like some of that expected (if questionable) mobile porn revenue may have just gone out the window.

Chinese Cops Crack Down on Mobile Porn

Chinese Cops Crack Down on Mobile Porn 03/29/2005 01:56 PM

chinese_porn.jpgIf you're a conessiour of mobile porn and happen to be travelling in China, a word of advice: they don't take kindly to your smut around those parts. The China Press is reporting that pornographic or even just 'lewd' images on mobiles are an infraction, and Chinese police reserve the right to conduct surprise checks on moblile phones users. I don't know if pornography in general is illegal in China, but it will probably be best to keep it off your phone and on your laptop, where it belongs.

And no, I have no idea what these Chinese characters mean, but I bet it's something vulgar.

Let Them Eat Mobile Phones

Let Them Eat Mobile Phones 09/22/2004 09:15 PM
Reuters is reporting that African leaders want to buy a bunch of mobile phones because "there are more telephones in Manhattan than in all Africa." Apparently, if you just add mobile phones to a bunch of poor countries, all else will be solved. I've taken a deeper look at this story over at TheFeature, where I compare the situation to the famous "cargo cults" of the South Pacific in World War II, where a confusion over the big picture (and cause and effect) led groups of people to think they could solve all their problems by mimicking the basic actions of others, but not getting to the root causes of the situation. I do think that technology can be a huge help to developing nations, but ad hoc solutions to "just add technology X" are never going to help unless the real issues are addressed first.

Mobile Phones Shouldn't Be TVs

Mobile Phones Shouldn't Be TVs 11/17/2003 05:45 AM
In the past few months three major mobile phone makers (Sony, Samsung and Nokia) have announced plans to add TV tuners to their mobile phones and one major carrier (Sprint PCS) has launched a painfully slow (2 frames per second!) streaming TV option for some of their subscribers. The whole thing reminds me of the hype around portable TVs that were popular for a week or two in the eighties as the second coming of the walkman system. The idea was that if you liked carrying around your radio, wouldn't you like to carry around your TV as well? The answer turned out to be a big fat no, and most of the people who bought the TVs realized they never actually needed to watch TVs when they were out and about - because they were out and about doing something. So, why is the industry making the same mistake? Douglas Rushkoff thinks it's even worse, because having the mobile phone industry focusing on silly things like adding television to phones means they're spending less attention on improving the real reason people buy mobile phones: to have good voice calls. All the money and effort being spent on adding TVs no one wants could be better spent improving the mobile phone networks. He also has an interesting categorization of screen device "scales": inch, foot, yard. Inch devices (PDAs, phones) are for personal content or small bits of content - not for massive data retrieval. Foot devices (TVs, monitors) work as well for data input and data retrieval - and can be shared by just a few people at the same time. Yard devices (movie screens, big screen TVs, whiteboards) are better designed for one-to-many broadcast communication. He points out that realizing the basic size of the screen suggests the type of applications it's good for - and focusing too much on applications out of the sensible realm doesn't make sense.
