RealNetworks and Starz Encore Group have dusted off a 2002 agreement to serve movies over the Internet using RealVideo 10. The new service, dubbed Starz! Ticket on Real Movies, is subscription based with no restriction placed on the number of flicks that consumers can watch for the flat monthly fee of $12.95 USD.

RealNetworks and Starz (the cable channel) have launched an online movie distribution service with a monthly flat-fee, similar to Real's Rhapsody music service. Called 'STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies,' only around 100 movies are currently available on the $13 a month service, although I would imagine more are to be added in the future. What I'm most dubious about is the quality of the films -- the Reuters report mentions a 20-minute download time for each movie, which seems way too small to download a high-quality file. Of course, a compact file size could be good news if they want to start pushing these DRM'd files out to mobile devices.

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven is determined to dip their Slurpee straws into the world of digital content, looking to offer music, movies and whatever else they can think of to their customers, saying "customers should be able to walk into a 7-Eleven store to burn their favorite songs onto a CD or download content onto their portable music player." Picture-perfect scenario: Their system allows me to bookmark a song I like on the radio so that when I go to 7-Eleven next, it asks me to confirm my song purchase when paying for gas and sends them (wirelessly) to my portable/car media player. With their talk that the digital delivery system will be viable for them within 10 years, I think they could have something that advanced up and running by then. (Thanks, Ravi!)

Fuse Music Network, they of the confusing Hamish subway ads (I've never watched it), has announced a new show called "Daily Download" which will give viewers a special code to enable downloading a specific song off ther Fuse website. In addition to MP3s, the show will also offer special (and presumably free) ringtone downloads, for those of you whose phones can't play MP3s as ringtones.

The Tennessee Board of Regents , representing forty-five campuses, rejected a plan to launch a noninfringing music downloading service. Roxio , who owns Napster 2.0 , made the offer, which includes a monthly fee paid by students, and the rights to streaming content.

However ,

...the mandatory fee that was part of the Tennessee plan, coupled with the perception that illegal downloading doesn't pose a specific problem for the schools, prompted system officials to table the idea, said Bob Adams, the Regents' vice chancellor for business and finance.

Several colleges and universities are already piloting such a service, such as Penn State .
