Good discussion this morning on NPR's Weekend Edition about whether The West Wing has improved this season after the departure of creator and genius Adam Sorkin. I think it has. I thought the conclusion of the opening episodes featuring the fabulous John Goodman was strong when it turned out [SPOILER AHEAD] that Josh's fears about Republican abuses were in fact just projections of his own overly-political worldview. The inklings of a legitimate opposition strengthen the show. On the other hand, the melodramatic split between the president and the first lady seems pretty contrived to me. And there was one moment...

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular 06/23/2004 09:11 AM

junxion.jpg imageAlthough they're still in the prototype stage, a Seattle company called Junxion is doing something potentially very useful. By plugging any number of cellular network PCMCIA cards into their 'Junxion' box, which then acts as a router over Ethernet or WiFi to any number of local machines, the company plans to capitalize on the ever-expanding data bandwidth available on modern cellular networks. So instead of scrambling to find a WiFi connection -- which is still a good option, of course, especially if it's a free node -- you can set up a mobile workplace with a decent internet connection anywhere you can get a cellular signal. You're limited to the speeds of the cellular network, of course, but between a Junxion box, which is pretty large now, but will surely get smaller, and built-in WiFi, you should be able to get wireless internet just about anywhere. And that, as they say, owns. (Thanks, Oliver!)

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AM
Junxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system, which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network, and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe and no....

Wyty, Opt-In Cellular White Pages

Wyty, Opt-In Cellular White Pages 08/05/2004 06:57 AM

front_page_ad1.jpg imageI have no clue whether or not Wyty (Whitey?), a new opt-in cell phone directory, will take off or not -- opt-in often means opt-not-to, in my experience. Still, they're doing some interesting things, such as allowing Voice-Over-IP numbers and other contact information to be listed alongside your cellular number so you can have all your contact information at once. And of course, you retain control over your information's detail, not the wireless carriers.

Still, until and unless they get at least a majority of the country's cellular users into the service, it may be of only middling use. Nevertheless, I pass it on to you.

White men bad; white dogs worse

White men bad; white dogs worse 04/05/2005 09:24 AM

We spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy could play with them.  One of the nice things about colleges located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors live close to the campus and are available to students for informal dinners and shared extracurricular activities.  Thus over the weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College professors.  I asked one of them whether faculty could bring their dogs to work.  She replied "The college's Affirmative Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules.  One of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep together.  Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."

This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as college professors.  The college pays lower salaries, to people of the same age, as the public high school down the street.  The high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate assistants.  The high school teachers are union members who ever have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this event).  And now these poor souls are expected to get through their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of an interlude with a more senior professor.

[Note to parents:  if you want to know why tuition prices have risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a "Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which to spread the cost.]

Email: to sign or not to sign? 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
If you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought, maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do: continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?

That's the promise of new converged or hybrid services that will become available sooner than you think.

Cellular sounds

Cellular sounds 04/15/2004 01:10 PM
What do cells sound like? Nanotech pioneer Jim Gimzewski and grad student Andrew Pelling are using the tiny tip of an atomic force microscope like the needle of a record player to pick up a cell's sound-generating vibrations. Gimzewski has named the fieled "sonocytology." From a Smithsonian Magazine article about the research:
"The distance the cell wall moves determines the amplitude, or volume, of the sound wave, and the speed of the up-and-down movement is its frequency, or pitch. Though the volume of the yeast cell sound was far too low to be heard, Gimzewski says its frequency was theoretically within the range of human hearing. 'So all we're doing is turning up the volume,' he adds."
