Spammer Complies With CAN-SPAM, Claims
ISPs Should Not Filter His Spam
05/20/2004 07:05 PM
Ronnie Scelson is one of the shortlist of spammers who just seems to love publicity. While many spammers like to hide away, Scelson's always willing to talk. He testified before the Senate Commerce Committee today, claiming that he is now compl ying with CAN-SPAM, but threatened to ignore the law if not enough of his spam messages were getting through filters. He actually has the audacity to complain that now that CAN-SPAM is in effect, ISPs should be required to let his mail through. Maybe the filters are a little to thick around his head and the message isn't getting through to him: the reason his spam is filtered is because people don't want it.

Human Spam Filter

Human Spam Filter 08/05/2004 08:41 AM
I wonder if there are anyone out there who will want to employ me to be their human spam filter. I'll do nothing the whole day except to read e-mail and to manully tag junk e-mails and spam. Guaranteed 100 percent accuracy only after, say, 1 week of training.
But seriously, folks. For those who depend on the e-mail inbox for their livelihood, this seems to be a service that will be valuable. What do you think?

Personal Outgoing Spam Filter

Personal Outgoing Spam Filter 01/22/2004 02:12 AM

Most spam filters work on incoming mail.  There are some outgoing mail spam filter at mail server level, but not at the e-mail client level.  Spam filter at the e-mail client level allows the sender to avoid sending messages likely to be blocked by spam filters at the destination.

My theory is that spam filters among people with similar interests are alike.  I have no evidence to back this theory but, if true, then if my spam filter thinks a message I am about to send is a spam, then the spam filter used by the person I am sending the message to will think so as well.

Sorry to post this here, but this is a last resort. I have a customer named Curtis who purchased FeedDemon via PayPal, and he keeps emailing me asking for his registration information. Unfortunately, I've already emailed his registration information - several times.

Curtis, if you're reading this, most likely you've got a spam filter that's wrongly blocking email from the bradsoft.com domain. Please correct this problem, then contact me again so I can make sure you get your registration information. And let me know your phone number in case my next email to you bounces!

BlackHole Spam/Virus Filter 0.9.107
(Stable) released
07/09/2002 12:52 AM
Blackhole Spam/Virus Filter provides spam and virus filtering using dot-files in all the major MTA/SMTP servers for UNIX and similar systems. It is easy for an individual user to set it up with shell account access and configure. It is different from other, similar programs, in that it executes a minimal number of programs to do the filtering, is able to use a MySQL database for the users' configuration files, can be set up as the queue in Qmail, and have virtual users' configuration files be found using the username/domain for the recipient. Multiple checks are available, and there open options on how to treat flagged email. There is logging to multiple entities, auto-expiration of flagged email, and scoring available so that multiple checks require matches that add up before blocking.

The latest poster boy for spammers is Scott Richter, who gives a fairly extensive interview with PC World where he claims, among other things that he's not a spammer, that he's making "the Internet a better place with e-mail marketing," and that he may start selling an anti-spam filter. It's funny because he continues to insist that he's not a spammer, but talks about how, without him, all those anti-spam companies would be out of business -- so they need him the way doctors need tobacco companies to keep people smoking.

Intelligent Message Filter is based on Microsoft SmartScreen Technology from Microsoft Research. By using e-mail characteristics tracked by SmartScreen technology, Intelligent Message Filter can help determine whether each incoming e-mail message is likely to be spam. Based on this likelihood, you can choose to block e-mail messages at the gateway or at the mailbox store. For more information about Intelligent Message Filter, see Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Overview. Important: Before installing Intelligent Message Filter, you must read the Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Deployment Guide. If you do not configure Intelligent Message Filter correctly, your messaging environment can be negatively affected.

Spam My Gmail Account 04/20/2004 10:14 PM
Well, not literally. But I need to get a sufficient volume of mail into jzawodn@gmail.com that I can get a better feel for what it's going to do. You know, to see past the gigabyte and all. Sure, I'll probably dig up some stuff from my archives and send it over, but it'd be more interested to use recent mail. Of course, as a byproduct of putting my address here, I'm sure to get actual spam as well. That'll help...

Spam in gmail: the test

Spam in gmail: the test 04/09/2004 08:02 PM

Well, since everyone and their mother has a gmail account and is posting screenshots, I figured there's one important test left to do that no one else has done yet. I want to test out the limits of this new email app, see how long it stays spam free:

Let's see how long it takes until I've got some junk in the ol' inbox, and what the tools are like to deal with it. More later, whenever some spam shows up.

Gmail Adds 30 Day Mass Delete For Spam
Bin

Gmail Adds 30 Day Mass Delete For Spam
Bin
09/13/2004 01:12 PM
TDavid writes "A couple weeks back I wrote about how Gmail was missing a feature to mass delete emails in the "spam" bin and that I'd confirmed with the Gmail team that this feature had not yet been available. Since this is a beta product, they are looking for feedback and I was hoping to get folks to contact them and request this feature. Good news! This campaign seemed to help. Over the weekend I noticed a new message in the Gmail spam bin that indicates: "Warning: Spam messages more than 30 days old will be automatically deleted." This would be great except that the automatic deletion does not (yet) seem to be fully enabled. Currently the automatic deletion is moving slower than the spam actually comes in." As I mentioned in the addition to the original article, it seemed likely that they would add a time-based delete feature for spam -- and I'm sure it will start working better at some point. Of course, it would be nice of them to let users choose whether or not to enable this. I've used the Gmail search feature to find older messages that were designated as spam, but turned out not to be. Also, I should mention that since the complaint last month that the Gmail spam filter wasn't particularly good, it seems to have improved a great deal. It's still not great, but it's certainly getting closer to other spam solutions out there.
