Hybrid CSS Dropdowns 03/30/2005 09:45 AM
Yup. It's yet another CSS dropdown article -- but one that resolves many problems associated with common dropdown methods and degrades beautifully. Hybrid CSS dropdowns allow access to all pages, keep the user aware of where she is within the site, and are clean and light to boot. It's a tasty little vitamin pill, so quit sighing and try it.

While Scout recently reported on hybrid automobiles from the current make and model point of view, this topic in depth explores the history and technology of electric and hybrid cars and considers the options available for car buyers and the future of fuel cell technology. This article from the Detroit News suggests electric vehicles are becoming popular (1). The second website (1) provides an interactive history and archived documents about the development of electric vehicles. The third link describes a specific program involving U.S. corporations and the Federal government (2). The fourth link takes you to Argonne Laboratories transportation website, which provides articles and reviews recent research developments (3). If you are looking to buy an electric or hybrid car this website provides information on the various alternative vehicles and, and California residents can find out about state government-sponsored incentives for car buyers (4). This last website from the Why Files offers an analysis of some of the pros and cons of electric vehicles and suggests fuel cells have more potential (5). JVC's Blu-Ray/DVD Hybrid Disc 01/03/2005 10:33 AM

Just like the recently-developed HD DVD/DVD dual-disc format from Toshiba, JVC is showing a new prototype triple-layer Blu-Ray/DVD hybrid that puts a 25GB Blu-Ray layer on top of a coventional two-layer 8.5GB DVD disc. Dual format discs are hoped to ease the transition from DVD to whatever format will win the upcoming standards war (probably Blu-Ray).

Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid

Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

sony_psp_keyboard2.jpg imageSpeaking of the N-Gage, Sony is now making stink about various versions of the PSP being released in the future that may be hybrid integrations of the PSP and cellphones, PDAs, etc. They let on about this a little at E3. Remember those clear, plastic overlays they had over the top of all the demo models? At least one of those had the look of a cellphone keypad. Portagame has a partially-translated interview with SCEI CTO Masa Chatani, where he also mentions that Sony still hasn't finalized exactly which screens the PSP will be using. I wonder if that worldwide LCD shortage is freaking them out yet.

Hybrid Financial Analysis

Hybrid Financial Analysis 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Cost savings may not offset higher price for hybrids: Gas-electric hybrids are expensive, but you get all that money back in gas savings, right? Well, probably not.

The study, the latest on break-even points of hybrid cars, shows that in most cases, an owner would have to drive a hybrid tens of thousands of extra miles a year or gasoline would have to hit stratospheric levels to reach a break-even point with a comparable gas-powered model.

[...] When compared with the smaller, gas-thrifty conventional Corolla, the Prius wouldn't equal the five-year costs unless it were driven 66,500 miles a year or gas reached $10.10 a gallon.

Depressing. But the prices will come down, I'm sure.

Hybrid Solar Lighting

Hybrid Solar Lighting 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

world_science.jpgOak Ridge National Laboratory, which conducts all of its research in tuneful four part harmony, has developed a system that uses sunlight (I actually started to write 'solar-powered light') pumped down fiber-optic tubes to complement an integrated system of flourscent bulbs. When there's sufficient light outside, a sensor cuts the electric blubs, letting the light shine in. Obviously, piping light from roofs to fixtures is something that's best done when the buildings are actually built, but it's a great idea all the same.

Of course, they don't mention that the light snakes down around your throat as you sit in satori, attempting to harness the power of mind to expand your forehead real estate. (Thanks, Boo Boo Prime!)

adt_mobilesafety.jpg imageADT Security Services new MobileSafety combines GPS, cell phone, and mapping service features into a least-common denominator device that strips most of the functionality of its inspiration in a trade-off for ease-of-use. One push of the single button on the device puts the user in touch with ADT's monitoring center via the speakerphone, where emergency services can be routed to your location or directions can be audibly given. You can even add the ADT Trak option to keep real time tabs on the location of the car via ADT's website or by phone. It's not a bad idea, really. Even though there are dozens of more full-featured devices out there that do similar things, ADT already has the call centers set up to support their home and business security systems, and the $129 price point (plus the $20/month monitoring fees) is a pretty low barrier to entry for those that want a little more safety in their cars. (Thanks, Matthew!)
