Diebold Will Add A Paper Trail... At A
Huge Price
12/16/2003 01:47 PMI think it's now been determined exactly why Diebold is so afraid of
adding a paper trail to their voting machines: they keep getting
burned by paper trails. After emails exposed just how insecure their
voting machines were, a set of internal Diebold communications show an
employee suggesting that, should they be required to retrofit voting
machines with paper trails that they
charge ridiculously high
fees to do so. Diebold has said that the cost of the printers
included in a voting machine would run about $1,000 to $1,200, which
may seem a bit high for a pretty simple printer. The internal memos,
however, point out that this is just part of the strategy. Since
they're going in and replacing or retrofitting machines that have
already been bought, Diebold sees them as captive customers who will
be forced to pay whatever Diebold wants.

Is The New York Times The Paper Of An
Obsolete Record?
Is The New York Times The Paper Of An
Obsolete Record?
07/14/2004 06:35 AMWe've discussed many times how newspapers simply don't get the
internet, and Adam Penenberg is suggesting that there may be no
greater example than the NY Times. The Times, of course, was one of
the first online newspapers to require online registration and set up
a paid archive for articles after a short period of free time online.
However, because of that, the
New York
Times results barely appear at all in Google. If they're striving
to be "the paper of record" then they need to be where people are
looking -- and these days, people are looking in Google. Penenberg
notes that despite the fact that the Times makes very little money off
of those archives, they won't open them, because it might endanger
their $20 million per year deal with Lexis-Nexis. Talk about getting
hung up by legacy systems. Either way, it's a good point that the
folks at the NY Times (and other newspapers) need to realize. Being
online means being accessible. If you're not, then today's surfers
aren't going to care. You may believe you can hang onto a small group
and sell their demographic data to advertisers, but the
data is
dirty and the times are changing. People don't want to jump
through hoops when there's a lot of other content out there, and if
the command line of the internet is a search engine, these sites that
block themselves off are simply making themselves obsolete.
Ohio Authorizes E-Voting, Wants Paper

Ohio Authorizes E-Voting, Wants Paper
Record Within Two Years
05/10/2004 11:53 AMWhile California is
banning
all e-voting machines unless they agree to some fairly strict
security provisions, it looks like Ohio has now
auth
orized the use of e-voting machines for the November election.
The state will require a paper trail for e-voting machines - but not
until May of 2006. If they're going to require it anyway, I don't see
why they shouldn't require it now. This basically means that for the
next two years we have no way of knowing how accurate votes from Ohio
will be.

The Men Who Stare At Goats
The Men Who Stare At Goats
04/07/2005 10:17 PMDavid Pescovitz:
I just finished reading
Jon
Ronson's latest non-fiction book The Men Who Stare At Goats and it
was brilliant, absurd, scary, deeply freaky, and lol funny. The cover
of the book says it's a story "about what happened when a small group
of men--highly placed within the United State military, the
government, and the intelligence services--began believing in very
strange things." Some of those odd beliefs include: psychic spying
(aka "
remote
viewing"), Jedi powers, subliminal sound weapons, and the ability
to kill an animal just by looking at it (hence the title). As
demonstrated in his previous book, "Them: Adventures with Extremists,"
Ronson has an amazing talent for seeking out individuals on the
fringes of reason and enchanting the reader with their (truthful?)
tales of high weirdness. Forget any questionable conspiracy theories
about the US military--the truth is far stranger. From the dust
jacket:
In 1979 a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within
the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and
indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt
the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps
most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with
defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth
Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're
back and fighting the War on Terror. 'The men who stare at goats'
reveals extraordinary - and very nutty - national secrets at the core
of George W Bush's War on Terror.

Low tuition encourages career slackers?
Low tuition encourages career slackers?
06/22/2005 02:23 AMThe students whom I met during a brief stop at University of
Wisconsin in Madison seemed to have chosen majors that aren't very
useful vocationally. My friends who teach liberal arts at
high-tuition schools in the Boston area report that their students are
very focussed on getting into a high-paying career with an MBA or a
law degree. Two girls at U. of W. who stopped me to ask about
Alex seemed like good examples of what happens when tuition is only
around $3000/semester (in-state). One was majoring in
philosophy and headed for a Ph.D. program in philosophy. The
other was in women's studies and headed for graduate school at UCLA in
women's studies.
Were these a statistical anomaly or is there a correlation between
low tuition and students pursuing the intellectual life?
