Microsoft Under Fire from Nintendo
Management
06/09/2004 08:46 AMWhy the push towards Xbox Next, console bundles, and Grand Theft Auto
have one Nintendo manager steamed. Nintendo Europe managing director
David Gosen has strongly criticised Microsoft for attempting to drive
the industry to a hardware transition too early, and also attacked the
games media for its focus on the next generation. Speaking at the
ELSPA Games Summit in London, Gosen described the industry's current
generational cycle as a "self-fulfilling prophecy," saying that the
industry was stuck in a mindset where "five to six years is right, and
come what may, we're going to stick to it."

Microsoft under fire for 'critical'
14-patch update
04/20/2004 08:31 AMMicrosoft is facing criticism about the size and lack of testing of
the monthly security update it released last week, which contained 14
patches.
Russ Cooper, chief scientist at consultancy TruSecure, said, "By
supplying patches to 14 different components of Windows in a single
patch, declaring many of them to be critical, Microsoft has forced
administrators to adopt patches to all components."
This will prolong the testing users need to undertake. He also
suggested that the lack of beta testing puts a question mark over the
quality of the Windows XP Service Pack 2, which is due to be released
before the end of June.

That Microsoft XML Patent
That Microsoft XML Patent
06/05/2005 11:19 PMThe coverage from ZDNet says the patent is for the
conversion of objects into XML files; but if you read the patent itself, the important “Claim 1” doesn’t even
mention XML, it’s just about serializing objects based on using an
annotated source file and a schema. I was trying to find a way to
write about this without becoming shrill and using bad language, but
failing. Fortunately, I ran across a good opinion, shrill but not
obscene, penned by Greg
Aharonian who’s a real actual patent lawyer and thus qualified.
Herewith a little bit of my own shrillness, followed by Greg’s
professional evisceration of this extreme case of patent bogosity.

07/07/2004 09:40 AMEncinitas inventor William Louis has been fighting Microsoft Corp.
since 1998 over patents for ergonomic keyboards – with very little
success. Yesterday, he finally had something to smile about. A federal
appeals court resurrected Louis' long-running federal lawsuit accusing
the software company of patent infringement. In the decision by the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the court said a U.S.
District Court judge in San Diego made a mistake when she ruled that
patents held by TypeRight Keyboard Corp. for V-shaped keyboards with
wrist rests were invalid. Louis co-founded TypeRight in the early
'90s.
