Should The Telcos Be Scared Of VoIP?
Should The Telcos Be Scared Of VoIP?
11/11/2003 06:47 PMOver at Business Week, they're realizing that
VoIP looks damn scary to the traditional phone
companies. The turning point, according to the article, was the
recent announcement that IBM is going to shift most of its workforce
to a VoIP solution instead of a traditional phone system. From there,
they look at the media's latest VoIP darling, Skype, to point out that
the telcos might be in trouble. More importantly, though, it
discusses the recent moves by Stealth Communications to create a
public exchange for VoIP networks. While most people think about how
the various FWD, SIPPhone type applications might inter-operate, the
Stealth announcement could mean that large companies using VoIP
wouldn't even need to enter the old telephone network for calls
outside the office. If, as is described in the article, both GE and
IBM have their own VoIP systems, which connect via this exchange, the
call remains entirely over IP and never has to enter the traditional
phone system. The question, then, is what should a phone company do?
They can't deny that this is coming, but that doesn't mean they just
need to roll over and play dead. Just an hour or so ago, at the
Pulver Wireless
Summit, former FCC chair Reed Hundt was talking about the idea of
offering free VoIP calls, and letting consumers free up the money they
spend on voice to invest in true broadband access to the home.
Opening up the possibilities and allowing more things to happen
present new opportunities to make revenue. Holding on to legacy
systems and complaining all the way down the drain does little to help
anyone. That's not to say that telcos aren't going to face a drastic
change in how they do things - or that they'll successfully navigate
the change. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that telcos are
dead.

For Call Termination?
Will Telcos Get To Charge VoIP Providers
For Call Termination?
03/19/2005 03:17 AMWith all the hype over VoIP,
Om Malik is pointing to one thing that has the potential
to seriously damage many VoIP providers' plans. The FCC might
deny Level 3's petition to be exempt from termination
charges (though, they may add further exemptions as well). The
issue here is that the VoIP providers don't pay termination fees to
telcos for calls that end up on their network. The telcos, obviously,
would like them to pay up -- which would significantly increase the
costs for VoIP providers, in turn increasing the fees for VoIP
service, taking away much of the "benefit" from the existing sales
pitch. Of course, it's not clear the FCC would actually let it get
that far, but there's obviously room to be concerned. Once again, you
have to wonder why the VoIP providers don't
open
up their networks and build a developer community. Letting those
developers come up with useful apps would create value beyond just
"cheaper phone service."

Verizon Discovers Unified Messaging
Verizon Discovers Unified Messaging
08/09/2004 06:09 AMApparently, the telcos are being forced to innovate again, and they're
doing so by looking back at what people have talked about for ages.
The idea of "unified messaging" or "unified communications" isn't
particularly new, so it's not entirely clear why Wired News seems to
think it's absolutely amazing that
Verizon
has just figured out how to offer such services. A lot of the big
telcos have been slow to offer these kinds of features, even if
smaller, nimbler companies (especially in the VoIP space) have been
messing around with them for years. In this case, Verizon is giving
some users the ability to manage voicemails, emails and text messages
via their computer or their phone, including the ability to transfer
calls to the most appropriate phone based on time of day or to
automatically transfer certain calls to voicemail. These are all
things many VoIP providers have been offering for a while, so if
anything, this is just Verizon trying to catch up.

A Grand Unified Theory Of Filesharing
A Grand Unified Theory Of Filesharing
04/12/2004 11:19 AMEd Felten is trying to explain seemingly different conclusions found
in three different studies on the impact of file sharing to come up
with a
"A Grand
Unified Theory of Filesharing." His theory is that there are
really two different types of file sharers - and most people looking
at these studies try to take the aggregate data and assume they define
a single type of user. The two types he sees are "free riders" and
"samplers" - which makes a lot of sense. Those are the two competing
forces that everyone (other than the recording industry, who doesn't
believe samplers exist) always talk about. All of these studies that
suggest little impact on sales from file sharing suggest that these
two forces may cancel each other out right now. The studies suggest
that younger users are more likely to be free-riders (downloading
music instead of buying), while older users are more likely to be
samplers (buying music based on what they downloaded and liked). On
top of this, he believes that studies that are based on surveys will
tend to over count free riders - since samplers may be more aware of
the legal issues involved in file sharing, and less willing to admit
to the practice. As Felten points out, of course, this only describes
the situation today and doesn't try to predict what will happen as
today's younger generation of free riders grows older. Of course, if
you look back one or two decades, I'm sure we'd see a similar
dichotomy where younger music fans (with less money) were much more
likely to pass around copied tapes until they got older and could
afford to buy more albums. Of course, if you look at this from the
view of the recording industry, it would make sense to focus on ways
to turn free-riders into samplers. Of course, that's not what they're
doing. Right now, they're trying to stop both free-riders and
samplers by suing just about everyone. It seems like a better
strategy would be to work on ways to give extra incentives to people
who buy - such as access to concerts or fan clubs. While these are
the types of things more likely to attract younger users, if Felten's
theory is right, those are the users who need these incentives more.
