U.S. Leads Home Wi-Fi Market 01/09/2004 09:52 PM
Around 50 million homes in Europe, the United States, and Asia will have Wi-Fi by 2007, according to report from BWCS: Today, about 5 million homes have Wi-Fi, and most of them are in the United States. Around the world, 23 percent of broadband homes should have Wi-Fi by 2007. While some analysts commenting on Magis' recent bankruptcy say the market isn't ready to connect various home electronics, this story sites IDC research that says the next phase of Wi-Fi development will come from connecting the computer, TV, cameras, and MP3 players. That sounds like the next logical step and a great extension of use of existing Wi-Fi networks....

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market

Apple leads in booming global MP3 market 06/22/2005 01:54 AM
Apple is the leader in worldwide MP3 sales with 30.2 percent of the combined HDD and Flash-based MP3 market -- a market which recorded a revenue increase of 200 per cent to reach approximately $4.5 billion in 2004. In-Stat released a report today that cited falling prices, the availability of legitimate subscription and pay-per-download online music sites, smaller hard disk drives and increasing Flash memory capacities as reasons for the booming MP3 player market. "As competition heats up, vendors are striving to differentiate products by offering a wide range of price points, memory capacities and features," said Stephanie Guza, In-Stat analyst. "As a result, we are seeing increased segmentation. For example, the hard disk drive (HDD) digital audio player segment can be subdivided into two categories: the 1-inch or smaller segment and the 1.8-inch segment." In-Stat also says that survey data shows that the percentage of U.S. respondents owning a digital audio player has increased from 16% in 2001 to 25% in 2005.

Forty-two percent of all spam sent this year came from the United States, according to security software company Sophos. U.S. leads top spamming countries 12/28/2004 11:39 AM
Security software company Sophos has published its latest report on leading spamming countries and found that 42 percent of all spam sent in 2004 came from the United States. Other countries topping the list are South Korea and China, with the two countries producing over 21 percent of the total global spam. "Many of the computers sending out spam are most likely to have had their broadband internet connections exploited by remote hackers," Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos said. "Zombie computers--PCs that have been compromised by hackers or virus writers--are sending out over 40 percent of the world's spam, and many users who fall victim are unaware."

Mac leads Linux, but for how long?

Mac leads Linux, but for how long? 08/13/2004 11:20 PM
Wired News seeks to ;quell reports from IDC that the Mac OS has already been overtaken by Linux. According to reports, most analysts are skeptical of Linux"s actual real-world dominance, despite sales numbers. While Linux machines are shipping in ever greater numbers, especially to giant markets like China, the vast majority are stripped of Linux in favor of pirate copies of Windows, experts say. However, with an increasing number of mainstream companies adopting Linux in their low-end machines, it remains to be seen whether the Mac can hold on to its seemingly tenacious grip on the second spot. "We expect to see Linux overtake Mac on the desktop this year," said Jeffrey Wade, HP"s Linux marketing communications manager. Wade said HP already sells 100,000 Linux desktops per quarter. (That"s between 30,000 and 40,000 Linux computers, not servers, per month.)
