Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card?
Is PayPal The Fifth Credit Card?
05/03/2004 01:45 PMAfter working incredibly hard in the legal arena to make sure that
they weren't declared a bank, PayPal is now doing much more to
appear
bank-like to websites that want to take transactions. They're
implementing a series of web services designed to make it easier to
incorporate a PayPal option for commerce sites, along with traditional
credit cards. Of course, some are pointing out that the demand just
isn't there for such things. The end-users don't see much benefit if
the site already has a merchant account and can offer credit card
payments. There isn't much of a benefit to end users to use PayPal
when they can just as easily use a credit card. The only advantage is
to sites that can't afford or don't want a merchant account of their
own - and they're probably already using PayPal.

A Different Kind of Credit Card

A Different Kind of Credit Card
Statement
04/30/2004 12:44 AMVisa Toys With Credit Card Displays
"Visa International is experimenting with credit cards that include
a small display screen where customers could view recent transactions,
bank balances, or local currency exchange rates, says Deborah Arnold,
Visa's vice president of global consumer strategies....
Visa expects to have produced working prototypes of the devices in
about a year's time, Arnold says, although with security and other
technology issues still to be ironed out, it's likely to be a few
years before such cards become widely available. In addition, the
LCD-like screens being used in early designs are too fragile for
everyday use, Arnold says....
Another issue with the use of display screens on credit cards is
cost-effectiveness, she says. 'It's all expensive--the cost of the
battery, the display, hooking [the display] up to the chip. The
initial cards with these displays are going to be very expensive,' she
says....
Clearly, displaying personal account information on a card presents
potential security concerns, and Visa is looking at technologies such
as biometrics and passwords to secure access. Banks and end users will
help to determine how much security is necessary, and certain
information, such as points accrued through loyalty programs, might
not need much protection, she says." [PCWorld.com]

02/10/2004 02:44 PMBruce Tognazzini writes in his Ask Tog column Top 10 Reasons to Not
Shop On Line: "...Why can’t I input my credit card number the way it
appears on the card? Why do I have to suck the extra spaces out,
making it all but impossible to re-scan it for errors? We’re talking
three spaces here, three bytes." (via Usability Views) I will quite
often try to see if a credit card number field gives me enough room to
enter it with spaces. If it does, I will then delete the spaces
because I know so many places can't handle them. Any of you web
programmers out there, tell me you couldn't write code to strip three
spaces out of a credit card number? We're talking regular expressions
101 here. In a similar vein, I once asked a programmer I was working
with to allow social security numbers to accept both no spaces or
hyphens, and they told me the code to take hyphens out was easier than
the code insisting the user enter it without hyphens....

Replacing All Your Credit Cards With A
Card Writing Device
Replacing All Your Credit Cards With A
Card Writing Device
03/06/2004 02:05 AMWired is running an article about a new sort of device that is being
designed to
replace
all your credit cards. It's a fascinating idea. It's a small
device (the "Pocket Vault"), that comes with its own card (the
"Chameleon Card") stored inside. When you first get it, you stick
each of your credit cards, bank cards, debit cards, whatever cards,
into the device, and it records the info on the magnetic stripe.
Then, all you need to carry around is the device (with its own card
inside). When it's time to use a card, you pull out the device, pick
the card you want to use, and it spits out its own card with all the
info on the magnetic stripe, and with a display showing the credit
card number, expiration date and logo. It also includes some
interesting security features. It has fingerprint recognition before
you can remove the card, and if the card is out, the display fades
after 10 minutes, making it useless. They claim that it will also
work with RFID based systems, like the ExxonMobil SpeedPass, but don't
explain how it records that info. It might also run into problems
with smart cards, since it won't be able to record the info off of a
chip. There are some other concerns as well. This seems like the
ideal way for someone to steal credit cards if they can access your
card for a bit. There are already stories of waiters in restaurants
who take your credit card and run it through a skimmer to get the
number. If they just use this instead, they get an automatic replica
of your card. Also, you have to wonder if various clerks will freak
out the first time they see this and wonder if it's legitimate.
Finally, carrying around a device doesn't seem to save much space,
since the device itself is probably bigger than the credit cards its
replacing, and it won't fit in your wallet. Sure, the gadget geek
side of me thinks this is a cool idea, but is it worth $200 to have to
carry around another gadget (that also slows down the purchasing
process...)? It might be a tough sell.

12/15/2003 11:35 AMGreat commentary by JWZ about the coming RFID wave-to-pay
credit-cards:
"I like that it's on your keychain and it's fast to use,"
said Kristie Beenau, 36, of Peoria, Ariz., who has used ExpressPay for
about six months at a CVS Pharmacy and fastfood restaurants. "I charge
everything anyways. Now I wave it rather than get my card out. It's
more convenient."
I'm going to make a fortune by selling an invention that lets you
punch a hole in a credit card so that you can wear it on your
keychain. Then later I'll repurpose that invention to let you punch a
hole in a $20 bill, so you can wear that on your keychain too!
