Dali in Smithsonian
04/04/2005 01:18 PMDavid Pescovitz:
The new issue of my favorite magazine Smithsonian has a thorough
biographical feature on Salvador Dalí. The article is pegged on a
huge internationally-touring
exh
ibit now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art celebrating Dalí's
100th birthday last year. From the article:
"The true painter," artist Salvador
Dalí once said, "must be able, with the most usual things, to
have the most unusual ideas." Born in 1904 in the province of
Catalonia in northeastern Spain, Dalí spent much of his life
promoting himself and shocking the world. He relished courting the
masses, and he was probably better known, especially in the United
States, than any other 20th-century painter, including fellow Spaniard
Pablo Picasso. His love of sensation and flair for publicity quickly
made him, in one scholar's words, "Surrealism's most exotic and
prominent figure." Diffidence was not in his vocabulary. "Compared to
Velázquez, I am nothing," he said in 1960, "but compared to
contemporary painters, I am the most big genius of modern
time"...
"The only difference between a madman and myself," he once wrote, "is
that I am not mad!"

Ideas are
made to be copied. I have enough ideas to sell them on. I prefer that
they are stolen so that i don't have to actually use them
myself.
I wish Dalí has said, "works" or "art"
instead of "ideas", but this still rocks.

Disney/Dali Oscar nomination has execs
in a tizzy
02/12/2004 07:31 PMSam sez, "Disney/Salvadore Dali film Destino nominated for Oscar.
Disney PR isn't happy with the thought of Roy Disney speaking to 200
million viewers."
"This is really a lose/lose situation for the Walt Disney Company,"
said one studio insider. "If the studio doesn't mount a really
aggressive promotional campaign in order to claim a Best Animated
Short Oscar for 'Destino,' Roy and Stanley get the right to complain
that the Disney Company deliberately torpedoed this film's chance. Out
of fear over what Walt's nephew might say once he gets up on stage at
the Kodak Theatre."
"On the other hand, if Disney does put together a great Academy Award
promotional campaign for 'Destino' and the short does actually win,
all the suits still have to sit there and sweat. Wondering if Roy is
going to use his opportunity -- standing there in front of over 200
million television viewers worldwide -- to talk about his campaign to
remove Eisner."

The subway centennial
The subway centennial
05/04/2004 03:11 PMYou have until the end of the year to check out the New York Public
Library's exhibit, The Subway at 100: General William Barclay Parsons and the
Birth of the NYC Subway, but why wait?
Celebrating the centennial of the opening of the New
York City subway system in 1904, this exhibition both salutes William
Barclay Parsons, the first chief engineer of the subway, and
recognizes the importance of the subway system to the life and growth
of the city.
Sounds great, and since the subway is one of my favorite things
about New York City, I'm keen to learn more about its construction and
history. I'm adding this exhibit to my to-do list.

Oppenheimer Centennial: It is telling that the first atomic
test would be named in reference to a poem by John Donne
("Trinity") and the next series of tests would be
labeled simply alphabetically according to military protocol
("Able," "Baker,"
"X-ray," "Yoke," and
"Zebra"). It is indicative of the changing of hands
of the bomb, moving from the responsibility of intellectual eclectics
like Oppenheimer into the protocols of military rank and policy.
