Logging
02/10/2004 02:45 AMOne of the nice side effects of the efforts
towards fortifying my weblog against comment spam and floods, is
that I've invested some time into logging of various unusual server
conditions. Initially, this was for forensics, but it has
proven much more useful than that.

Logging the documentary
02/12/2004 12:51 PMI'm happy to report that loggnig the documentary happens pretty
much at live speed. I just run the tape and log as it goes. So 20
hours of tape means 20 hours of logging. Not too bad.
I created a table in Word. The first column has the timecode
(0:25:41), the second the scene ("plane"), the third details ("old man
looking"), the fourth comments ("nice image - bad sound"). I only use
the comments for 1 out of every 5 rows, more or less. A 1 hour tape
turns into about 2 pages in Word. I just run the video on the TV and
type in my Word doc as it goes.

"Our internal use of Weblogs has greatly accelerated, and
were beginning to see more tangible benefits as weve begun
to reach a critical mass of internal contributors....
Since then, my team has been using the
blog-driven IT roadmap in weekly staff meetings as a platform to
discuss the initiatives we have completed and to look ahead to new
ones. Our meetings no longer have agendas or redundant handouts,
because we dont need them. Of course, some items have dropped
off our master plan altogether, and new ones have been added, but the
important point is that our master plan is always updated and readily
available on our intranet, and any changes are distributed via RSS to
anyone who wants to see them. Aside from the public Weblog, we
maintain our own Weblog for more technical documentation, which has raised our level of internal
documentation by several orders of magnitude already.
Our internal use of Weblogs doesnt
stop there. Software Engineer Kevin Varley has created
Varleys Project Notes, his own Weblog to keep notes
on his development projects. Kevin makes inventive use of the comment
functionality available in Movable Type. After outlining coding and
debugging tasks in posts with titles such as Taxonomy
Terror, Kevin uses the comments feature to make additional notes
about how his initial assumptions ultimately played out.
Weblogs are not just for the hard-core
techies. Our editorial staff recently started its own Weblog to share
updated style guides, edit calendars, and other tools of the trade.
Im looking forward to seeing what unexpected points of leverage
they achieve with their Weblog. Its amazing how a system so
simple and easy can produce such profound results." [InfoWorld, via Tomalak's Realm]
I hadn't thought to use the comments in
this fashion, but it's a great idea. I think I'm going to set up my
own personal blog for the next two months' worth of my projects for
our upcoming merger.

Logging Off The Internet
Logging Off The Internet
01/23/2004 02:23 PMSteve Cisler is getting some publicity for his decision to
log off
the internet for a while and drive around the country trying to
figure out how people get by without the internet. While some of his
friends think it's the equivalent of committing suicide, others say
they envy him, as they're sick of being inundated with spam and adware
and such. My guess is that he won't have that much trouble going
offline. People spend a lot of time online because it's there, and
it's very very useful for a lot of things, but I still don't think
that too many people absolutely rely on the internet for being able to
exist.

They Don't Teach That in Business School
06/05/2005 11:47 PMStanford rejects hacker applicants: As near as I can tell,
these people didn't do any "hacking," per se. They just put their ID
numbers into a querystring argument. You'd have to be pretty loose
with the term to call that "hacking."
Admissions sites of at least six schools were accessed by
applicants for about 10 hours in early March after a hacker posted
instructions in a BusinessWeek Online forum.
The instructions told people to log onto their admissions Web page
and find their identification numbers in source material that was
available on the site. By plugging those numbers into another Web page
address, they were directed to a page where their admissions decision
would be found.
