Near Real-Time Content Deployment 06/11/2004 10:14 PM

I just got finished watching Ronald Reagan's funeral. It was very, very touching. I was intrigued by all the pagentry of it — this is the first presidential funeral in 31 years, and the formality and choreography of the thing is just amazing.

Anyway, at the end, Nancy was sitting near the casket and she got up to say her final goodbye. She broke down in tears over the casket, and all her children came to comfort her. The noise of the camera shutters was just defeaning by this point — they were going off like machine guns.

Immediately after Nancy and the Reagan children left the podium, I shut off the TV and came down here to my office to check my email. I get to my mail through Mozilla, and CNN.com is my home page.

I was amazed to see the picture on the lead story was the exact same image of Nancy and the children that I saw on live TV not 90 seconds before. The mechanics of content deployment that fast on that big of a stage must have been something to behold.

AP Says Its Time To Charge Partners For
Online Content

AP Says Its Time To Charge Partners For
Online Content
04/18/2005 11:29 PM
This probably doesn't come as a shock to many, but at its annual meeting today, the Associated Press announced that it would begin charging newspapers and broadcasters to post its content online starting in 2006. Currently, licensees of AP content are allowed take content they've licensed for print and repurpose it for online at no additional charge. Clearly, the AP is trying to evolve itself to meet the shifting media consumption of the average user, from trying to charg e Google News for AP content to offering charg ing several different versions of an AP story. With its new "eAP" platform, licensees will be able to access news via a searchable database, complete with tags. However, the question remains, will the current licensees see the benefit to paying for the same exact commodity content? The Associated Press is making the bet that online is now part of its affiliates' long term strategy. Feeling the pinch in their classified and advertising revenues, newspapers are scrambling to invest in the web. The AP realizes that it has been giving away too much for too little. Couple with the fact that the AP is starting to build its own online presence, and the AP can hope for two endgame scenarios. Scenario one is that the affiliates find an adequate return in licensing AP content; in this case, the AP is able to extend its current model to the online medium. Scenario two is that most licensees cannot justify paying for the commodity content, and only a few larger trafficked sites decide to take on the expense. In that case, the AP has its own ad-supported news site, which could end up being the one main source for AP content -- but it could also lose out on content from members who are upset at the higher fees. Either way, we're witnessing the latest experiment in how the traditional press makes its way into the internet world.

Getting a real-time look at open source 01/22/2004 02:11 AM

Recently I've been working on a project that might be of interest to other Advogato users: CIA, a system for tracking commit messages (and eventually other things) from any open source project. When new code is committed, the news instantly shows up on a web site, an RSS feed, and an IRC channel.

Unlike other similar projects that focus on bringing one project's commits to only its developers, CIA lets anyone see what development is happening right now, regardless of where or what for.

Real-Time Car Tracking with EVDO 03/23/2005 05:36 PM

evdo_car.jpgThis is why EVDO cellular internet is cool: the guys from EVDOInfo.com rigged together a little application using off the shelf parts to display on a web page their car, its exact location and velocity, as well as the current view out their window. It's tricks like these that will make EVDO (and UMTS, if Cingular ever gets it deployed) a standard feature for "carputers" before long.

And to think, just a few short years ago these technologies were reserved for child molesters and enemies of the state.

Real-Time PHP-Nuke Hacking 12/02/2003 12:19 AM
A couple weeks ago, I posted asking for web discussion board recommendations. In the comments Rasmus Lerdorf pointed out that most system suck because their security is a joke. Of course, he's right. I've been on Bugtraq long enough to realize that the popular PHP-based boards and community systems seem to get compromised in some way or another (SQL injection, cross-site scripting, etc.) on a very regular basis. That's part of the reason I asked in the first place....

Employing Humans To Get Real-Time
Answers
05/11/2004 01:24 PM
I've always been a big fan of technology businesses that actually use humans to fill in the gaps where technology fails. However, as someone who runs a company that fits under that umbrella, the big question everyone asks is "how well does it scale?" I'm sure that's the same question that the folks that the folks running Any Questions Answered - a new service in the UK that lets anyone using a mobile phone send in a text message question - which will be quickly (one hopes) answered by a human at the other end (for a pound each). Of course, the trick to scaling is to have technology help those humans do what they do more efficiently. Thus, AQA's answerers apparently have some software (Google?) that helps them quickly answer standard questions. The company also is looking to employ random people at home to help answer the questions - which raises the inevitable (second) question of quality. Of course, in many ways this is similar to Google Answers - with the big difference being that you only pay if you get the correct answer with Google. Though, it's also not done via a mobile phone and not nearly as quick.
