If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?
If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?
03/22/2005 05:03 PMWired Magazine is now suggesting that
discs
are dead as a storage medium. With all the battling going on over
the next generation of DVD technology, Wired's products editor, Robert
Capps, notes that not very many people seem to care about the new
"high definition" audio CDs that have come out. Instead, everyone's
focused on getting an iPod and digitizing their music. While video is
definitely more difficult to transport via the internet, the argument
is that the technology is improving for compressing and transmitting
larger files. Of course, it might be interesting to put Capps in a
debate with Mark Cuban -- who also thinks that discs are dead, but
that
portable
hard drives or flash drives will take their place. Cuban's
argument is that "storage is expanding far more quickly than upload or
download speeds to our homes," so it's going to be more efficient to
move around hard drives than bits of high definition content. With
some already experimenting with
offer
ing content on iPods, it is beginning to look like this battle for
the next plastic disc technology may be a waste of time.
Update: Then again, some analysts think
discs will be big business for
the next five years. Of course, analysts always seem to be overly
positive in their predictions -- it's what helps sell reports.
Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?
Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?
12/15/2003 03:16 PMMicrosoft's career page contains a very interesting job advertisement.
The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to
manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next
generation Xbox console." Moreover, the ad stresses the importance of
anti-piracy technology in the development of the new discs for the
next generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply
try to incorporate sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now
standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a
proprietary format. Nintendo did it with their GameCube discs, and
they were quite effective in combating piracy -- so why not Microsoft?

Who Made Your Blank Discs?
Who Made Your Blank Discs?
03/19/2005 02:22 AMYou may think that you know what manufacturer made you blank CD or
DVD discs, it was Fujifilm, TDK
Electronics, Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, Hewlett-Packard or another
recognizable brand. You would be wrong. In
fact, most of this blank media is manufactured by a short list of
companies: India's Moser Baer, Japan's Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, and
Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Optodisc Technology.
The major name brands that actually create their own CD’s
are Sony and Philips.
Of the manufacturers that actually make the media, Taiyo Yuden is
the one recognized as the best, with the highest quality product.
Trying to figure out who makes your media is not easy. The best
website for talking about the brands and the media and what are some
great deals for media online is Digitalfaq.com.
Here is more from the article on Wired… Some media can
burn reliably faster than its rated speed. A DVD+R might be rated at
4X burn speed, yet with certain recorders, it can be burned at 8X. The
factors that contribute to high- or low-quality media are varied.
Several choices are on the market, and which one is used can affect a
disc's reflectivity, and thus its readability. But beyond that, says
Pieper, "if your dye is unevenly spread, or the other materials and
workmanship are shoddy, it doesn't matter what dye is used." Also,
Pieper says if the glue job on the platter is sloppy, "the media
literally falls apart." Taiyo Yuden media
stands as the golden child for blank-media enthusiasts. Popular
opinion swings the other way for manufacturers such as CMC Magnetics
and Princo.
