07/15/2004 01:29 PMThe recent
Flickr announcement of comb
ined photo/blog feeds at Feedburner brings up a feature I've been
meaning to build for ages. For no other reason than to see if it could
be done, I've been looking into a way to create a combined feed for
this site, featuring two entries above the typical archive of the last
x weblog entries. The first entry would be the photo of the day, taken
from my tenyearsofmylife.com site. The second was going to be an extra
special feed-only post that was basically "my current favorite word"
or "thought of the day" that I'm too lazy to make a full entry on this
site or a sidebar feature.
I never got around to doing it because the ten years site is on
another server and the feed would have to be sucked in somehow, then
two onsite feeds would need to be combined. It seems like a perfect
fit for someone like Feedburner though, since they're pulling in all
sorts of stuff.
There's an obvious endpoint I could see quickly moving my feed to.
I've often joked that among all my websites, this blog is sort of my
own personal "temple of ego," since it's fairly self-indulgent and I
pretty much link to everything I'm posting somewhere else, from here.
I could see basically creating an "ego feed" that is the ultimate
representation of me. Here's what I would put in my ultimate combined
feed:
- last x posts from this site
- most recent photo from my Ten Years site
- feed of my recent posts to MetaFilter, MetaTalk, and Ask
MetaFilter
- x most recent Flickr photos
- last x bookmarks posted to my
del.icio.us space
- my upcoming events, on
the days they happen I suppose
- last x posts I've made to the Creative Commons
weblog
- my last x posts to PVRblog
- link to the last feature I
wrote
- Any new story I write at Ticketstubs
- Any significant comments I make on any other blog, if I could
optionally click something to "send to my feed" as I post it.
Ideally, all the last x posts/photos from other sites would be
intermixed into the feed, as they happen. So the feed wouldn't be
always in the same order, but ordered by posting date, and may include
content from any website or service I'm posting to.
Basically, it'd be the cult of me, all in a single feed, and you
wouldn't have to scour a dozen sites looking for my contributions if
you really wanted to follow my writing. I suspect we're not a long way
off from Feedburner
allowing you to do something like that.

Marketers gone wild
Marketers gone wild
03/06/2004 01:51 AMI haven't been in a doctors office in about five years, and I was
surprised by what I saw today in my local medical office. I don't
remember the exact names of the drugs (ha! take that
marketers!), but as I began filling out paperwork, I noticed my pen
was provided by some drug company. All the pens seemed to be
advertising different drugs. "I'll take the pen that contains less
than 2mg of Hydrobaric Cyclohexinal" I said. My clipboard was provided
by another drug. When I turned in the paperwork at the front desk,
that's when I noticed the Kleenex box was advertising yet
another drug.
I'm not usually one for nostalgia, but bring back the days when the
most obnoxious advertising in an office was copies of People and
Highlights strewn throughout. When you can't sneeze without an ad in
your face, something's wrong.

Beware the "wild" salmon
04/12/2005 01:47 PMThis is really disturbing: the New York Times reports that Stores Say
Wild Salmon, but Tests Say Farm Bred in several stores in New York
City.
Tests performed for The New York Times in March on salmon sold as wild
by eight New York City stores, going for as much as $29 a pound,
showed that the fish at six of the eight were farm raised. Farmed
salmon, available year round, sells for $5 to $12 a pound in the city.
Emphasis mine.
Given the contaminants found in farmed salmon, this deceptive practice
troubling for consumers trying to make informed healthy decisions. I
used to eat a lot of salmon but have really dropped the amount I eat
in the past few years. Now it's less than once a month whereas it used
to be twice a week, if not more. It's too bad because I love salmon,
but it's too difficult to determine its source, especially when
suppliers appear to be lying.

surrecting Gnomedex
Hey gang - mind if I have a virtual heart-to-heart with
you? As you probably know, life has been very busy for me down here in
Southern California. I’m four years removed from Iowa, and eight
years into producing Lockergnome. We announced our fourth-annual
conference a few months ago, and I’ve watched it blossom into
something completely different than what it was in the beginning. I
hope you don’t mind my decision to bring Gnomedex back to its roots:
the people.
No open bar, no Comedy Central - just a whole bunch of geeks gone
wild on their own volition. Since ~50 people had signed up when we
were still promoting the “liqueur” angle, we’ll be honoring that
offer with drink tickets. It’s Gnomedex 4, plain and simple. Yes,
we’ll have parties. Yes, we’ll have speakers. Yes, we’ll have
panels. Yes, we’ll have fun. Yes, we’ll have sponsors. Yes,
we’ll have WiFi. With these two adjustments, we’ll also keep the
original spirit that made our convention so successful in years past.
That’s what I really want (more than anything else).
So, there you have it. Gnomedex 2: Attack of the Gnomes. Gnomedex
3: Fellowship of the Geeks. Gnomedex 4: Geeks Gone Wild.
[Lockergnome]
God i hope it's not normal.
I am gettign SO TIRED of sitting in audiences, listening to the
same peopel say teh same thing and then waiting for the :30 seconds
you're given to ask one question. That format is SO DEAD!
Last week we just debated for 2 hours. That worked.
Chris has the opportunity of doing something new and different. I
sure hope he does.
Meanwhile Supernova is this week - let's see how the hecklebot and
the backchannel disrupt the flow and create something new.

Wild parrots in San Francisco
My first year in San Francisco, I'm living in Russian Hill.
One day I hear squawking up above like I've never heard, and I love
birds, don't know why, but I look up.
I see a flock of big green parrots, almost feels miraculous.
Since then, I learn that SF has two flocks of such parrots, and for
years, Marc Bittner has been studying and feeding them. I feel this is
really cool.
Today, I just finished his book the Wild
Parrots of Telegraph Hill and it was really good. It also
discusses a
related documentary by Judy Irving, same subject, and I
gotta see it sometime. [craigblog]
When I lived on the Embarcadero - flocks of squaking parrots would
coming flying across the sky. It's wild. A truly San
Francisco experience.
