Cometa Ends Its Short, Over Hyped, Life

Cometa Ends Its Short, Over Hyped, Life 05/18/2004 06:16 PM
The fine folks over at Wi-Fi Networking News have found out that Cometa is shutting down tomorrow. Cometa, of course, was the massively overhyped me-too play in the WiFi space that didn't make sense to a lot of people since the day it was announced. When Cometa first launched we were incredibly underwhelmed - noting that they had nothing special to distinguish themselves from every failed offering, other than their three big name backers (Intel, AT&T and IBM). However, in the early days the company focused a lot more on talking about its pedigree than talking about how they actually planned to come up with a business model that worked. In many ways, the company imitated Metricom, the failed provider of Ricochet broadband wireless. They picked a market with some hype, but could never figure out what the real business model would be. When people started questioning their announced plans to install 15,000 WiFi hotspots by 2005, the company insisted they would make it. Turns out, by 2005 Cometa won't have any hotspots. We have nothing against companies trying to get more WiFi out there, but just because you get money from Intel, AT&T and IBM, it doesn't mean the rules of business don't apply to you.

So Much For Procket

So Much For Procket 06/11/2004 03:43 AM
At the bottom of the down years in technology, there were still a few companies that managed to raise lots of money at insane valuations and have dot-com insanity-style stories. One of the biggest was Procket. When news first came out about the company they were still in "stealth" mode (oh so very dot com), but had a $1.55 billion valuation. As stealth as they claimed to be, everyone knew they were working on the next generation of "super router" to be the next Cisco or Juniper. The company has gone on something of a soap opera ride since then, with more executive shakeups that you should bother counting. Om Malik started the story buzzing today after hearing that s omeone was looking to buy up Procket, and it didn't take long for the rumors to get picked up elsewhere: Cisco has bought some of their assets for $80 million. From $1.55 billion to $80 million in about two years. That takes talent.

A week ago we wrote about the rumored deal that Cisco had bought massively overhyped router startup Procket for $80 million. All week long, no announcement came, and rumors started flying that there was no deal, or that others were trying to top the deal. Yesterday, there was even more speculation that there was no deal when Cisco CEO John Chambers claimed they didn't need any additional routing products or technology, though he snuck in one important caveat: saying the opportunity to acquire talented engineers might make an acquisition worthwhile. Basically, this was his way of spinning the Procket acquisition in a way that didn't make it looks like Cisco's own new router technology was a complete dud. Today, they made it official. Cisco has acquired the company that raised approximately $300 million and was valued at $1.55 billion for a whopping $89 million... for the engineers, of course. Update: Procket founder Tony Li gives his thoughts in an interview where he says the price is a steal, but buying Procket is definitely going to upset Cisco engineers, who will feel it's a sign that they didn't do a very good job on the CRS-1 router (though, he also thinks Cisco "missed the market" with the CRS-1).

MCI For Sale

MCI For Sale 09/20/2004 01:24 PM
It looks like MCI's turnaround plan hasn't turned it around far enough. Reports are out this morning that the company is actively looking for a buyer. The company pretty much stopped doing very much at all for an extended period of time while they had to deal with all those pesky accounting scam problems. Now that they have their head above water, they're realizing that the tide has pushed them far, far away from where the rest of the telecom world is. While the article speculates that they may have trouble selling themselves, that might not be the case. The now-out-of-bankrupt company has a (hopefully) clean set of books, plenty of customers, and a network that many other companies already drool over. The one area that they probably should just jettison, though, is their consumer business -- or at least pull an AT&T move and focus only on VoIP. Of course, just like AT&T, MCI made the bizarre move to ditch their wireless play when having a foot in the wireless market was clearly in their long-term best interests.

Mobinote DVX-POD On Sale (Just Not Here) 08/16/2004 02:28 PM

DVX_handheld100x100.jpg imageThe Mobinote DVX-Pod 7010 is one sale from at least one Taiwanese retailer, it seems. For $19,000 Taiwanese New Dollars (about $585), you can take one of the stark white hard disk video players with a 7-inch screen firmly into your hands. Both hands, I'm saying, and with a tight grip. Because it's big, you see. Quite large. Very big.

Hefty.

But the thing is, even though I am a Champion of Small - see today's earlier comments about the Gmini 400, for instance - the DVX-Pod 7010 does a lot of things right, like having a high-resolution screen (720 by 480 pixels) and built-in PVR functions. It won't fit in your pocket, unless you're some sort of man mountain, but it's not pretending otherwise, either, and that goes a long way.

Will it ever stop (in the US)? Yo, I don't know. (Thanks, Ben!)
