Eledge is a Java servlet framework for creating and offering web-based courses in higher education and grades K-12. Used in combination with an underlying MySQL database, eledge is a fully open-source solution to the problem of overpriced commercial educational CMS software. Version 1.8 (stable) indroduces a unique feature: support for essay questions in class quizzes, homework, and exams. Essay questions are graded by hand separately from other type of questions (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and numeric), which are scored automatically. Eledge offers slick new tools for assisting instructors in grading essays, and then automatically folds the essay scores into the overall scores for the assignment. This release also offers expanded support for class sections, including the ability to create custom course content pages for different sections of students in the class. Other expanded features include tools to manage student journals and administer peer reviews of student reports uploaded to the server.

BlackBoard one month after IPO

BlackBoard one month after IPO 07/30/2004 12:03 PM

Business Week has an article about BlackBoard 's financial stamina, following its June initial public offering ( IPO ). The perspective is financial, rather than pedagogical.

Blackboard's co-founders are young and are focused on building a company that can react with rapidly to what customers want. Jim Kabbani, former director of worldwide sales at Blackboard, says "There is constant improvement of product." Kabbani says when he worked at the company, which was created in a rowhouse in Washington, D.C., it was part of the fast-moving dot-com culture. He notes that unlike other startups at the time, it remained nimble enough to survive the depths of the bust.

Windows Update: A Worthy Addition

Windows Update: A Worthy Addition 08/16/2004 10:29 AM

"It's also important to know that SP2 is a floor, not a ceiling, when it comes to computer security. You still need to separately buy, install and update anti-virus software. You'll also be safer with a stronger firewall than what's provided with SP2, either by purchasing a piece of firewall software or installing a home router that acts as a hardware firewall."
Meanwhile, my Sunday column says the update is Microsoft's best attempt yet at security (yes, faint praise), and that it "highlights the enduring and more fundamental reality of modern computing, including the risks that accompany our mostly captive allegiance to a monopoly product." My column in full: More...

Permission-Free Prison

Permission-Free Prison 05/16/2004 07:55 AM
Fascinating article by Seymour "Next Pulitzer a-Comin'" Hersh in this week's New Yorker. It alleges that the abuses at Abu Ghraib happened because a "special-access program" established by Rumsfeld to authorize quick-response kill/capture/interrogate operations took hold there. Hersh does not allege that Rumsfeld knew of or authorized the particular abuses, only that his program of secret, rough interrogation enabled them. But it's a far more nuanced article than I'm letting on. And, of course, it's well-told....

The woman behind one of the early "phisher" scams has been sentenced to 46 months in prison. This is the woman who happened to send out her phisher spam to an FBI agent working on computer crimes. It was also done very crudely - using an obviously non-official AOL email address, and pointing to a Geocities page where you were supposed to fill out all of your credit card info. If only all the phisher scammers were that easy to track down and toss in jail. These days the scams have become much more sophisticated, and it's unlikely many of the scammers will get caught.

A prison for non-human primates 09/23/2004 05:17 AM
David Pescovitz: The Chicago Tribune ran a fantastic article about a state pen in Punjab, India. The inmates are lifetime offenders, mostly nabbed for stealing, assault, and vandalism. Even the murderers are safe from capital punishment though. That's because in India, it's forbidden to kill monkeys.
Monkeys have invaded government ministries in New Delhi, ridden elevators and climbed along windowsills. Monkeys slapped students inside a girls school in a south Bengal suburb. A gang of monkeys in the city of Chandigarh ripped up lawns, broke flowerpots and yanked sheets off beds.

Some monkeys, mostly loners, have bitten people, injuring and even killing small children.

"Monkeys are very furious," said Ujagar Singh, the Patiala district spokesman.
