Alcoholism = stepping stone to success
(plus why we must all move to
Switzerland)
03/17/2005 03:24 AMThis article on the founder
of IKEA reveals some interesting tidbits...
- one can move to Switzerland and negotiate a fixed income tax
rate related to the value of one's house
- Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, is richer than Bill Gates
now, partly because of the slide of the dollar and partly because
Billg has been giving money away; the 77-year-old guy is worth roughly
$50 billion
- like our local hero George W., Mr. Kamprad has had trouble with
alcoholism (perhaps we need to encourage young people to drink
more?)
Alcohol is supposed to be so bad for brain cells, productivity,
etc. How can we explain the fact that so many hypersuccessful
people are or were alcoholics?

“N
ot only is it illegal, but it's becoming increasingly dangerous,”
Leggio said of underage drinking. How dangerous? Well apparently
dangerous enough that one affluent Kansas City community has decided
that it is best to have police spy on teens during high school
basketball games. Oh it gets better, apparently a carload of teens is
enough for a Lenexa cop to follow you! So the parents should be up in
arms right? Nope, they encourage the police, even calling them
("she told dispatchers that when she called home to check on her
son, it sounded like a party was going on"). Yet surprisingly,
despite this almost police-state like mentality against drinking,
atti
tudes are slow to change.

So, no oysters or alcohol
02/11/2004 07:01 PMI've missed most of the morning's presentations and spent the time
either hugging a pillow or the porcelaine thing in the toilet, you
know, the one where you put things and they disappear with a
"whoosh". It can't be a hangover - I had two glasses of
wine and a beer yesterday - so I'm wagering on some sort of a food
poisoning. I almost threw up during
Pe
rtti Korhonen's presentation in the morning - that would've
certainly created some excitement. :-)
Gah.
I dared to have a bit of rather excellent tomato-basil soup for lunch,
but I feel that we are still negotiating whether the soup should have
rights to a bit of fresh air every now and then.
The crappy thing about these conferences is that if you are not in
100%, you suddenly feel like an outsider real fast. Everybody's
talking about "the great presentation" from the morning, or
talking about the slide... And you are completely out of it.
Not to mention the precious moments you could've used to talk to the
wonderful minds that have been collected here.

Alcohol powder is
a new product on the US market. It is classified as a flavoring,
despite being 60 proof, and doesn't require any kind of license or
special handling for purchase. You can apparently use it as a
flavoring for many different recipes. I'm not sure if it will actually
get you tipsy since the page mentions that it is

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online
Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online
06/09/2004 01:16 AMFor years, one of the worries about offering wine and other alcohol
online for sale was that it would make it easier for kids to get
alcohol. However, the various e-commerce sites that sold alcohol all
claimed they had strict procedures to stop it from happening. A quick
test by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly and some college
kids put that theory to the test and discovered it was
quite easy for underage people to get alcohol online - and
some fairly well-known companies may take the fall. The various sites
did little to confirm the age of a buyer, and delivery companies
FedEx, UPS and DHL often ignored required procedures that the boxes be
signed for by someone over 21. In some cases, they even just left the
boxes in front of a door without ever getting a signature - even if
the box made it clear that a signature by someone over 21 was
required.
Alcohol Fuel Cell Goes Micro
Alcohol Fuel Cell Goes Micro
12/19/2004 03:41 PMThere’s a lot of energy in ethanol, which is non-toxic and can
be made cheaply from corn. Researchers from Saint Louis University,
who earlier this year developed a fuel cell using enzymes to generate
electricity from ethanol, have built a microchip-based version of the
device. The trick to constructing the biofuel cell was creating a
sheltered environment for the enzymes, which are fairly sensitive. The
researchers coated the carbon anode, or positive electrode, of
the…
