In 1991, I wrote a training manual for Stewart Alsop's Demo conference (it's now
Chris Shipley's show) that coached software developers on how to demo
software. The piece is a little dated, using the software buzzwords of
the time, but the basic ideas never go out of date. Focus on
comprehension, find the memorable feature, know that your prospect
isn't as interested in your software as you are, practice your demo a
lot, never use new software in your demos, and watch out for
competitors who try to derail your pitch.
In the last few days we wasted way too much time because of a
curveball thrown by a couple of really nasty competitors. It's true,
we're competing over something that doesn't make money, a format, but
as they say in academia, the less there is at stake, the more vicious
the competiton, or something like that. I've been Mr Naive about this.
Not no more.
I'm going to work with users, they seem to appreciate what I
do. The techies and developers, until further notice, are bums. I
almost want to say I hate what the technology industry has become, but
when has it been anything but back-stabbing, low-road bullshit. We
could be so damned powerful if we just worked together, but that
clearly isn't what's going on.

AT&T Wants To Scare Off VoIP Competitors
AT&T Wants To Scare Off VoIP Competitors
08/20/2004 07:42 PMAT&T, who just
dumped
their residential landline business in favor of VoIP is now trying
to suggest that
VoIP telephony is
going to be a tiny business -- worth only about $2 billion to the
$25 billion-a-year company. There are plenty of ways to respond to
this. First, just because they're a $25 billion-a-year company now,
that doesn't mean they always will be. Second, everyone
knows
that VoIP brings in less direct revenue. Part of the reason customers
are signing up for VoIP is that it's cheap. So, saying that it's such
a "small" market isn't really stating anything new. In fact, it seems
pretty clear that this statement is being said just to scare off
competitors who are thinking about entering the market. He's hoping
they hear that it's a small market and forget about it. Of course, if
it were really such a small market, why would AT&T bother? Because
they realize that the direct market for VoIP telephony is just the
beginning. VoIP opens up many new opportunities to provide services
and applications to users that will offer many more ways to profit
from the traditional telephony system. In fact, as VoIP establishes
itself as a
platform, expect to see more providers drop the
entranc
e fee towards zero, as it helps them build up other areas of their
business (and cause trouble for those who are only relying on voice
telephony).

Restaurant Week in NYC
Restaurant Week in NYC
02/01/2005 09:26 PMNew Yorkers, there's still lots of time to take advantage of Restaurant Week:
Enjoy special three-course, prix fixe menus at the
city's best restaurants. The restaurants listed below offer $20.12
lunches and/or $35.00 dinners during Restaurant Week. Duration: Jan.
24 - 28 and Jan. 31 - Feb. 4, 2005; Excludes Saturday, Jan. 29 and
Sunday, Jan. 30
I can personally vouch for lunch at 11 Madison
Park (three full courses with five possible choices for each
course and they gave me so much dessert)
and have also dined favorably in the past at Artisanal, Blue Smoke,
Craft, and Gramercy Tavern. The "lunch only" places are probably the
best deals...$20.12 for so much good food, it feels like you're
stealing from them.

06/17/2005 04:35 PMThe Motley Fool - Earlier this week, IBM (NYSE: IBM - News) unveiled
its latest and greatest supercomputer. The 91-teraflop monster, dubbed
"Watson Blue Gene," is capable of cranking out a mind-blowing 91
trillion calculations per second. This ultra-powerful -- yet
remarkably affordable, practical, and accessible -- computing tool is
likely to give IBM a significant competitive advantage over
competitors such as Affymetrix (Nasdaq: AFFX - News), Intel (Nasdaq:
INTC - News), and General Electric (NYSE: GE - News) in the life
sciences, information technology, and material sciences sectors.
How to order food in a restaurant
How to order food in a restaurant
06/05/2005 11:47 PMWhen you're out to eat with friends and family, it can be
challenging to decide what to order off the menu. There are often too
many choices on the menu, everything sounds good, nothing sounds good,
you're unfamiliar with a particular type of cuisine, you'd like have
what that woman over there is having but you don't know what that is,
etc. etc.
Luckily, a group of authors has recently released a series of pop
science books focused on solving this particular problem. Here are
some lessons on ordering food from those books:
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
Glance quickly at the menu and order whatever catches your eye first.
Spend no more than 2-3 seconds deciding or the quality of your choice
(and your meal) will decline.
Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
The key to ordering a good meal in a restaurant is understanding the
economic incentives involved. Ask the server what they recommend and
order something else...they are probably trying to get you to order
something with a high profit margin or a dish that the restaurant
needs to get rid of before the chicken goes bad or something. Never
order the second least expensive bottle of wine; it's typically the
one with the highest mark-up on the list (i.e. the
worst deal).
The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz
Take the menu and rip it into 4 or 5 pieces. Order from only one of
the pieces, ignoring the choices on the rest of the menu. You will be
happier with your meal.
The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki
Poll the other patrons at the restaurant about what they're having and
order the most popular choices for yourself.
Everything Bad is Good for You by Steven Johnson
Order anything made with lots of butter, sugar, etc. Avoid salad or
anything organic. A meal of all desserts may be appropriate. Or see if
you can get the chef to make you a special dish like foie gras and
bacon covered with butterscotch and hot fudge. Ideally, you will have
brought a Super Sized McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese
Meal into the restaurant with you. Smoke and drink liberally.

Canadian Restaurant Adds Wi-Fi
02/10/2004 07:57 PMEarls Restaurants is installing Wi-Fi with FatPort's help for both
customers' and managers' use: It's definitely passed a trend and into
routine that retail businesses find just as much utility and
potentially more cost savings (versus actual net income) from having
Wi-Fi hotspots in their locations. Most of the 50 restaurants already
had DSL installed, and so that wasn't a separately tracked cost.
Amusingly, it took quite a while for FatPort to install some locations
because of the infrequent airline service....
