MSN Stakes Local-Search Claim on Virtual
Earth
06/22/2005 02:18 AM
Microsoft plans to announce its initial push into local search on Monday as it takes a step closer to launching a competitor to Google's online aerial maps. The company's Internet division is expected to release a beta version of MSN Local Search. The service, which will be added as a link from the main MSN Search site, will provide geographically targeted search results about businesses and other local information, as well as online street and aerial maps pinpointing the results.

MSN's main competitors, Google, Yahoo and America Online Inc., already offer similar local listings, but MSN officials say they are already working on combining local search with more advanced online maps. To that end, MSN is set to announce that it is merging the team building the MSN Virtual Earth service previewed by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates last month with the MSN Search team.

Green Scientist: Nuclear Power Vital to
Save Earth

Green Scientist: Nuclear Power Vital to
Save Earth
05/24/2004 02:25 PM

  • James Lovelock: Nuclear power is the only green solution. We have stayed in ignorance for many reasons; important among them is the denial of climate change in the US where governments have failed to give their climate scientists the support they needed. The Green lobbies, which should have given priority to global warming, seem more concerned about threats to people than with threats to the Earth, not noticing that we are part of the Earth and wholly dependent upon its well being. It may take a disaster worse than last summer's European deaths to wake us up.
  • Lovelock's environmental credentials are unassailable. So this call for expanded use of nuclear power almost certainly comes in the best of faith. I wish he didn't minimize conservation. In calling nuclear power safe, moreover, he also minimizes the still-unsolved problems of long-term storage and the potential for nuclear materials to fall into the wrong hands (dirty bombs or worse, anyone?). And all it would take is one uncontrolled meltdown in a populated area to make nuclear power statistically less safe than just about any other form of energy. But his overall message is also pointed and impossible to dismiss. We are lurching toward disaster on our present course.

Sony Corp.'s new hard disk-based Walkman is the product with the biggest brand recognition that Apple Computer Inc.'s market-leading iPod has had to face since its introduction. But it's not the Walkman's 25-year history that bothers Apple executives, it's Sony's marketing message. When Sony released the 20GB Walkman they claimed to have trumped Apple with the number of songs that their device could hold -- 13,000 compared to the iPod's 10,000 -- even thought the total capacity was half of the iPod's. That message is misleading to consumers, according to Apple.

The Virginia Tech Supercomputer cluster affectionately known as "Big Mac" has posted numbers fast enough to qualify it for third fastest supercomputer, not fourth, as previously thought. The Register notes that the cluster, made up of 2,200 G5 processors in 1,100 Power Macintoshes, has reached 10.28 teraflops, which places it behind the Earth Simulator system at 25.9 teraflops and IBMs ASCI Q system at 13.8 teraflops. The two fastest systems are comprised of far more processors...

    G5 Cluster Officially 3rd Fastest 11/16/2003 09:23 AM
Virginia Tech's G5 cluster has officially been ranked as the world's third fastest supercomputer, with a performance of nearly 10.3 trillion calculations per second. Number 1 was Japan's Earth Simulator at 35.6 Tflops per second and number 2 the Los Alamos ASCI Q at 13.8 Tflops. The Virginia Tech cluster, built of 1100 DP 2GHz G5s, cost only $5.2 million, a fraction of the cost of the others in its class.
